HARTFORD, Conn. – The Trinity College field hockey squad shut out visiting Springfield College, 5-0, in a non-conference clash at Robin L. Sheppard Field Wednesday evening. With the win, the Bantams improve to 5-1 overall, while the Pride drop to 3-4 on the season.
The Bantams had a chance to crack the scoreboard in the fourth minute of action as a scramble for a loose ball landed at the stick of Trinity senior
Jackie Frank (Longmeadow, Mass.), who launched a shot towards an open net, but Springfield junior defender Claire Munkacsi (Gorham, Maine) laid out for a clutch defensive save.
Just over four minutes into the first quarter, Trinity senior
Kylie Tierney (Garden City, N.Y.) fired a shot that was stopped by Springfield junior Neilee Hess (Franklin, Mass.), but rebound rolled to junior
Izzy Deveney (Westport, Conn.), who delivered a put-back goal to give the Bantams a 1-0 lead.
With less than eight minutes remaining in the first period, Trinity senior
Katrina Winfield (Wilmington, Del.) gathered a free ball from the wing, drove to the cage and chipped a shot past Hess to extend the Bantams advantage to 2-0.
In the 24
th minute of play, Frank drove through the midfield and reached to chip a shot towards the cage, where Winfield knifed through the defense and tucked the loose ball into the back of the net, staking Trinity to a 3-0 lead. The Bantams held their 3-0 advantage into halftime.
With 7:26 remaining in the third period, Trinity first-year
Tatum Stickney (Byfield, Mass.) fired a shot on goal that was saved by Ness, but Stickney located the rebound and placed a shot to the back of the cage, netting her first career goal to give Trinity a 4-0 lead.
Less than five minutes later, the Bantams capitalized on another loose ball rebound, as Tierney ripped a shot on net that was stopped, but Winfield smacked the ball past Ness, recording her third tally of the game, extending the Trinity lead to 5-0 in the 3
rd quarter. The Bantams held their 5-0 lead until the final whistle.
"We played a really great team game in the second half," said Bantams head coach Jess Bergen. "Once we made adjustments, we had some great moments. We can work on being more clinical in our attacking end, but in the end we are happy with the 5-0 result. It's a great game to have heading into a doubleheader weekend of conference play."
The Bantams will look to keep their win streak alive with a NESCAC conference road trip to Wesleyan University. Kickoff is slated for Saturday at 11:00 a.m. Springfield host MIT in NEWMAC conference play Saturday at Noon.
