HARTFORD, Conn. — In his first career start, sophomore
Nate Dyott (Tarrytown, N.Y.) played solid goalkeeping for the Trinity College men's soccer team through 79 minutes of New England Small College Athletic Conference action against the visiting Connecticut College Camels on Wednesday. Trinity moved to 1-2-1 on the season and 0-1-2 in the league, while the visitors improved to 3-0-2 and 1-0-2. The Bantams continue with conference action when they travel to Wesleyan University on Saturday for a 2 p.m. matchup.
"I thought our guys played very well today after a very solid, disciplined performance, but we just came a little unstuck towards the end of it," head coach
Methembe Ndlovu (2nd season) said. "It was unfortunate, but I am still really proud of every single player on and off the field because they stuck together, worked together. Their performance was solid and I know the results will come."
In the net, Dyott nabbed five saves before the goal by Jack Kelesoglu knotted the game at one apiece in the 79th minute after a scramble in from of the net, mixing Bantams and Camels.
"I thought [Dyott's performance] went very well, but I also want to recognize the other goalkeepers who supported him and prepared him well," Ndlovu commented. "Having a career debut as the starting goalkeeper is never a piece of cake, but especially against a team like this, so I think he did very well."
The Navy & Gold notched the first goal of the contest in the 14th minute thanks to second-year Bantam
Kieran McCabe (Natick, Mass.), with a dead and center goal after bringing Camels' goalkeeper Peter Silvester to his knees.
"[McCabe] is really coming along very nicely, with so much potential and a great team player," Ndlovu noted. "He is responding well with what the team needs and I am really happy for him."
In the 85th minute, the Camels had an opportunity to pad the score by one off a penalty shot by Matt Scoffone narrowly squeaked by Dyott, for the 2-1 lead. Prior to either of the Camels goals,
James Donaldson (Kirkland, Quebec) had a close shot in the 63th minute but Marco Cerezo headed the ball out of the goal box for a defensive save. Silvester recorded a pair of saves, while the back field blocked two Bantam shots. The visitors outshot Trinity 25-11 and the Camels had five corner kick chances, while the hosts only attempted one.
"I think it was a real team effort, and I think our captain James leads by example with his work ethic and in his team play," Ndlovu concluded. "Everyone on the pitch contributed in different ways and it was a real team effort, which makes it more unfortunate to come away without a point, but we will keep working."
