NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Trinity College Women's Basketball team defeated host Connecticut College, 62-50, in a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) matchup at the Luce Field House Friday night. The Bantams improve to 10-5 on the year and 1-1 in the NESCAC, while the Camels dip to a 5-10 mark with a 0-3 record in conference action.
Senior Reilly Campbell netted the Bantams opening six points to help Trinity hold a 6-5 advantage with 5:45 remaining in the first half. Senior Bria Fuller knocked down a pair of buckets to keep the Bantams ahead 10-8, and then junior Hannah Marzon and sophomore Theresa Twardosky added free throws to give the Bantams a 13-11 lead heading into the second quarter.
The Camels opened the second quarter on a 7-2 run, capped by a three-point play from Addi Hunter, to take a 18-15 lead. Trinity used a 10-0 run over the next two minutes, featuring four points from sophomore Samantha Slofkiss, to regain control with a 25-18 lead. The sides traded buckets over the final minutes of the second quarter and a trio of free throws from sophomore Melissa Whitmore gave the Bantams a 33-29 at the break.
The Bantams orchestrated a 9-4 run over the first four minutes of the third quarter to build a 42-33 advantage for Trinity. A pair of free throws from Bria Fuller put the Bantams on top, 44-35, but the Camels whittled the deficit to 46-40 going into the fourth quarter.
The Camels put the game within one possession, 46-43, until senior Emma Wax delivered a layup and knocked down a three-pointer to set the score at 52-45 with 5:55 to play. The Camels used a three-pointer to trim the gap to 52-48, but the Bantams held off Conn at the free throw line, converting eight straight free throws down the stretch to lock up the 62-50 victory.
The Bantams had three scorers in double figures, led by a team-high 12 points from Fuller, who added a season-high nine rebounds, three steals and two steals. Junior Indi DelRocco netted a season-high 11 points with three rebounds, while Campbell added 11 points and three rebounds in 17 minutes of action. Slofkiss tallied eight points, three rebound, a block and an assist in the win.
The Bantams edged the Camels on the glass, 34-31, and controlled points in the paint, 24-10, and bench points, 19-9. Trinity connected on 19-of-49 (38.8%) from the field, including 2-of-9 (22.2%) from three-point, and 22-of-28 (78.6%) from the foul line. Conn shot 18-of-49 (36.7%) from the floor, 5-of-15 (33.3%) from three-point, and 9-of-12 (75%) from the free throw line.
Trinity will look to remain in the win column when they travel to Rivier University for a non-conference game Thursday evening. Tip-off is slated for 5:00 p.m.
