HARTFORD, Conn. – Trinity College Women's Basketball team collected their second New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) win of the season as they drove past Wesleyan, 67-56 for the final. The Bantams Rise to 11-5, 2-1 in the season, while the Cardinals sink to 9-6, 1-3 overall.
Senior Reilly Campbell opened up the scoring for the Bantams with a three-point play just seconds into the first. For nine straight points Theresa Twardosky was fluid from beyond the arc keeping the Bantams in the game. Within the opening quarter there were a total of seven lead changes with no more than a two point difference. Campbell would collect an easy two in the final seconds to tie the score 22-22 at the end of the first quarter.
With a steady point for point second quarter the Bantams would take the lead with a jumper from Maya Carnes, 28-27. For the remainder of the half Trinity would hold onto their lead with free throws from Samantha Slofkiss and Bria Fuller. Heading into the half the Bantams lead by one, 32-31.
Emma Wax netted a floating jumper to open the second half, the Cardinals would immediately answer back with a good three from Olivia Quinn, 34-34. The Bantams would build off a 6-0 run, creating the largest deficit of the game, 40-34. With points from Wax, Carnes and six from Cambell kept Trinity's lead above five to close out the third period, 50-45.
The Bantams played clean defense in the fourth with success on the offensive end to keep a steady 7-10 point lead over the Cardinals. With time running down on the clock the Cardinals would send the Bantams to the line as an attempt for offensive opportunities. Despite Wesleyan's efforts the Trinity women would finalize the win of 67-56 in NESCAC play.
Twardosky collected multiple season-highs against the Cardinals netting 3 three-point field goals, 1 block and adding 2 assists in one game. Campbell added 21 points for Trinity, snagging 12 rebounds to make it her 6th double-double of the season. Indi DelRocco cashed in 4 points and dished out a game-high of 4 assists. Wax recorded 10 points, while Fuller added 8 rebounds for the Bantams.
The Bantams dominated the stat lines winning the rebounding battle 36-27, and adding 32-16 points from the point. Trinity converted 23-of-52 (44.2%) from the floor, 3-of-16 (18.8%) from three, and 8-of-21 (85.7%) from the foul line. Wesleyan shot 16-of-48 (33.3%) from the field, including 6-of-20 (30.0%) from three-point range, and 18-of-20 (90%) from the free throw stripe.
The Bantams are back in Oosting Gymnasium as they host Colby College at 3PM on January 21st.
