HARTFORD, Conn. – Trinity College Women's Basketball team fell on the road to Bowdoin College in a tightly-contested New England Small College Athletic Conference match, 65-50 for the final. The Bantams dropped to 8-5, 0-1 in the season, while the Polar Bears improved to 12-1, 1-0 overall.
Senior Reilly Campbell opened up the scoring for the Bantams as she laid up an easy two points just minutes into the game. Despite the tight Bowdoin defense, Bantams Emma Wax netted 6 points to lead for the trinity and Hannah Marzo dished out two assists in the first quarter. After the first ten minutes of play the Bantams trailed 20-11 to the Polar Bears.
Down 24-11 Theresa Twardosky put up the first two points of the second quarter for the Bantams with a pull up jumper. Trinity tacked on eleven more points in the second quarter with four from both Twardosky and Melissa Whitmore. Unable to close the gap on Bowdoin's lead the Bantams dominated the boards registering 14 to the Polar Bears 4. Bowdoin's Sydney Jones and Callie Godfrey netted nine points each helping to grow the twelve point lead heading into the half, 34-22.
The Bantams maintained the twelve point difference putting up 16 points matching the Polar Bears for the quarter. Campbell collected a steal and put up 6 points in the third adding an assist and a block to the mix for the Bantams. For the Polar Bears Carley Davis went 2-for-2 from beyond the arc and posted a quarter-high of 10 points. The Bantams closed out the third quarter, kissing in two back to back three pointers from Avery Marzo and Melissa Whitmore, with an added jumper from Campbell. Trinity trailed 50-38 at the end of the third.
The Polar Bears continued to hold their lead as they netted 15 points, 8 of them from the charity stripe in the final quarter. The Bantams fell short on the offensive end as they were outscored 15-12 by Bowdoin. Trinity College would fall to a final score of 65-50 in NESCAC play.
Campbell led the Bantams with 15 points, shooting 6-of-12 from the floor, with a game-high of 9 rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks. Wax recorded 8 points with four rebounds and two assists, while Melissa Whitmore netted 7 points from the bench.
The Bantams won the rebounding battle by one board, 33-32, while the Polar Bears dominated points in the paint, 30-20. Trinity converted 20-of-52 (38.5%) from the floor, 2-of-8 (25%) from three, and 8-of-12 (66.7%) from the foul line. Bowdoin shot 23-of-53 (43.4%) from the field, including 6-of-16 (37.5%) from three-point range, and 13-of-27 (76.5%) from the free throw stripe.
The Bantams are back in action on Monday, January 8th on the road against Worcester State University for 12:00PM tip off.
