HARTFORD, Conn. - The Trinity Women's Hockey team handed visiting third-ranked Amherst College their first loss with 4-1 win in a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) clash at the Koeppel Community Sports Center. The Bantams improve to a65-3-1 record with a 1-3-1 mark in conference play, while the Mammoths dip to 3-1-1 in the NESCAC and 8-1-1 on the season.
With 5:58 to play in the first period, Trinity junior Martina Exnerova carried the puck into the Mammoths zone and then dropped a pass for sophomore Ava Gosnell, who ripped a shot through traffic in front of the Amherst goal and past Mammoths sophomore goalie Natalie Stott, staking the Bantams to a 1-0 lead.Â
The Bantams added to their advantage with 13:17 remaining in the second period as senior Jenny Guider fired a shot that was saved by Stott, but the puck squirted loose and Exnerova swooped in, spun behind the net and tucked a shot inside the post to make it a 2-0 game.Â
Less than three minutes into the third period, Guider gathered a loose puck in the neutral zone, skated into the Mammoths zone and sniped an unassisted goal past Stott top shelf to extend the Bantams lead to 3-0. On the faceoff following Guider's goal, first year Marta Mazzocchi carried the puck into the Mammoths zone and spotted sophomore at the far post for a one-timer to lift the Bantams to a 4-0 lead.
The Mammoths lone goal came with 14:44 to play as first year Clare O'Connor scored off a feed from sophomore Maeve Reynolds to trim the deficit to 4-1. Trinity senior Hannah Leclair posted 10 saves in the third period to preserve the 4-1 victory for the Bantams.
