Late Goal Gives WestConn The Edge Over Men's Soccer, 2-1

DANBURY, Conn. – The Trinity College Men's Soccer team surrendered a late goal that proved to be the difference maker in a 2-1 loss to host Western Connecticut State University at Westside Stadium Tuesday night. The Bantams dip to 2-11 on the season, while the Wolves improved to 12-4-2.

The Wolves earned a penalty kick opportunity in the third minute of play, but on the ensuing attempt, Trinity junior goalkeeper Felix Schmidt denied the shot from George Cortes to keep WestConn off the scoreboard.

In the 28th minute of action, the Wolves dented the scoreboard as Schmidt stopped a shot from Enzo Lagrassa-Gillet, but the rebound trickled out to Kamal Sabar, who found the back of the net to give WestConn a 1-0 lead. Schmidt logged four saves to close the first half and maintain the 1-0 score.

The Bantams found an equalizer with 36:42 remaining in the second half as sophomore Ian Spiro connected with senior Nick Bellak, who fired a shot past Wolves goalkeeper Zachary Benson to even the score at 1-1. In the 74th minute of play, the Wolves potted the game-winner as Nicola Acocella knocked home a feed from Kamal Sabar to prevail 2-1.

The Wolves controlled the shot column, 27-7, during the contest. Schmidt registered a career-high 10 saves for the Bantams, while Benson notched two saves for WestConn in the win.

The Bantams will return to the pitch when they host Hamilton College Saturday at 2:00 on Senior Day. WestConn travels to Southern Maine Saturday for an 11:00 a.m. match.
