HARTFORD, Conn. - The twelfth-ranked Trinity Women's Ice Hockey team were bested, 3-2, by the visiting Colby College Mules in a regular play in Koeppel Center on Saturday afternoon. Trinity owns a 6-3 record, 4-0 in the NESCAC while the Mules lift 5-2 in their season and sit 0-2 in the NESCAC.
The Mules dominated the shot count, registering 12 shots on goal compared to just 3 for the Bantams in the first period. Trinity's goaltender, Madeline Carter, stood tall, stopping every shot she faced to keep the game scoreless after 20 minutes. Both teams had power-play opportunities but were unable to capitalize.
Trinity struck first in the second period at the 12:16 mark. Livia Angioletti buried a rebound after a quick pass from behind the net by teammate Anne Levia, giving the Bantams a 1-0 lead. Colby attempted to answered shortly thereafter, earning a power-play chance. However, Trinity's penalty kill kept the Mules at bay, allowing just one shot, which was blocked by Marta Mazzocchi. With under two minutes remaining in the period, Colby's Georgia Pettygrove fired a shot from the top of the left circle that beat Carter, tying the game 1-1 at 18:36.
The Mules took their first lead of the game early in the third period. At 7:05, Colby's Breanna Studley found the back of the net with a power-play goal to give the Mules a 2-1 advantage. Five minutes later, Trinity responded. Mazzocchi pounced on a loose puck in front of the Colby net, poking it past Mules' goalie Mandy Busky to tie the game at 2-2 with 12:18 remaining.
With the score notted, 2-2, the Mules would find an opening to score the game winning goal off of a rebounded shot off of Carter's pads to clinch the 3-2 victory over the Bantams at 15:31. Late in the period, Trinity had a chance to force overtime, pulling Carter for an extra skater with 1:30 to go after a double minor penalty gave both teams 4-on-4 play. Despite intense pressure, the Bantams could not find the equalizer, and the Mules held on for the win.
Colby finished with a 29-19 edge in shots on goal and went 1-for-3 on the power play. Trinity was 0-for-2 with the man advantage. The Bantams did a solid job blocking shots, registering 15 blocks, while the Mules tallied 10. Carter made 26 saves in the losing effort, while Busky stopped 17 shots for Colby.
Trinity will look to bounce back on Saturday, January 4, when they host Williams College at 3:00 p.m. at the Koeppel Community Sports Center.
