HARTFORD, Conn. – The 13th-ranked Trinity College Women's Ice Hockey team suffered a 4-2 defeat to Williams College on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Bantams drop to 6-4-0 on the season, while the Ephs improve to 6-2-0.
Williams struck first at 3:08 of the opening period, when Leah Rubinshteyn broke through with a goal assisted by Annie Gallagher and Claire Murphy. The Ephs carried a 1-0 lead into the second period.
Just 3:47 into the middle frame, Williams capitalized on a power play, with Claire Murphy finding the back of the net for the Ephs' second goal. Less than a minute later, Noxon helped set up Williams' third goal, extending their lead to 3-0. Trinity responded with a strong offensive effort, firing 9 shots, but Ephs' goaltender Erin Pye turned them all away. The Bantams finally broke through at 13:59, when Paige Kehoe netted their first goal to trim the deficit to 3-1 as the teams headed into the final period.
In the third, after a hard-fought 15 minutes of play, Trinity's Martina Exnerova scored at 15:28 to make it 3-2. Exnerova collected a shot from Annika Dyczkowski that had missed the net and carried the puck to the top of the offensive zone. From just inside the neutral zone, she ripped a shot past Pye to give the Bantams life. With just under two minutes remaining, Trinity pulled goaltender Madeline Carter for an extra skater, but a misplayed puck in the Bantams attacking zone allowed Rubinshteyn to capitalize on the open goal, sealing the 4-2 victory for Williams.
Trinity outshot Williams 39-27 and won 31 of 54 faceoffs. Bantams junior goaltender Madeline Carter made 23 saves, while Pye stopped 37 shots to earn the win for the Ephs.
The Bantams will return to action next weekend, hosting Bowdoin College for a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) series beginning Friday, January 10th, at 7:30 p.m. in the Koeppel Community Sports Center.
