HARTFORD, Conn. – The sixth-ranked Trinty College Men's Hockey team shut out visiting Wesleyan University, 2-0, in a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) clash to close out the regular season at Koeppel Community Sports Center Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Bantams improved to 20-3-1 on the season with a 16-1-1 mark in conference, while the Cardinals finished the season at 3-14-1 in conference and 5-18-1 overall.
The Bantams logged their first 20-win season since the 2016-17 season, and secured the top-seed in the NESCAC Championship Tournament. Trinity will host eight-seeded Colby College in the Quarterfinals on Saturday, February 24.
Prior to the game, the Bantams recognized their departing seniors: Christian Hayes, Casey Rhodes, Devan Tongue, John Campomenosi, Kyle Tomaso, Gerard Marretta, Ned Blanchard, Jacob Smith, Alex Robert, and J.P. Mella.
Just past the midway point of the first period, the Bantams took advantage of a power play opportunity by winning a faceoff in the Cardinals zone. Junior Alexander Mozian chipped the puck back to classmate Theordore Griffin at the point, who swung the puck to Campomenosi, who fired a shot from center ice past Cardinals goaltender Marc Smith to stake Trinity to the 1-0 lead.
Following a scoreless second period, the Bantams potted an insurance goal with 8:41 to play in the third period as Marretta took a puck at the goal line, spun behind the Wesleyan net and found Tongue on the doorstep of the Cardinals goal, where he tucked the shot under the pads of Smith to give Trinity the 2-0 lead.
The Bantams dominated the shot column, racking up a season-high 61 shots to just 16 from the Cardinals. Trinity won the battle in the faceoff circle, 33-25, during the contest. Bantams sophomore goaltender Devon Bobak registered his fifth shutout of the season with 16 saves, while Smith made a game-high 59 saves for Wesleyan.
