MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Trinity College Women's Hockey team fell to host Wesleyan University, 3-2, in their New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) regular season finale at Spurrier-Snyder Rink Saturday afternoon. The Bantams wrap the regular season with a 15-6-2 record and an 8-6-2 mark in the NESCAC, while Wesleyan finishes with 7-7-2 in conference with a 12-9-3 overall record.
The Bantams will enter the NESCAC Championship Tournament as the fifth-seed and will travel to fourth-seeded Hamilton College for a Quarterfinals matchup on Saturday, February 24 at 4:30 p.m.
The Cardinals grabbed a 1-0 lead with 4:37 to play in the first period as junior Christina Tournas gathered a puck in the corner, skated down the goal line towards the crease and tucked a shot past the outstretched leg of Trinity senior goalie Hannah Leclair.
The Bantams found the equalizer in the final minute of the first period when Trinity dumped a puck into the Cardinals zone to kill off the final seconds of a Wesleyan power play. The Cardinal defender attempted to clear the puck to the front of the net, but junior Emma Robertson swooped in to intercept the pass and fired a shot over Wesleyan graduate goaltender Rei Halloran to even the game at 1-1.
Just over four minutes into the second period on a Bantams power play, Anne Levia received the puck in the neutral zone, skated towards the Cardinals goal, beat a defender to the center of the ice and ripped a shot over the shoulder of Halloran to put the Bantams ahead 2-1.
The Cardinals pulled even with 18:35 to play, capitalizing on a power play opportunity. After a shot sailed wide of the Bantams' goal, sophomore Caroline Kee played the rebound from a tough angle and the shot bounced off Leclair's back and into the net, knotting the score at 2-2.
Wesleyan netted the decisive goal on another power play opportunity as Kee fired a shot wide of the net, but the rebound traveled to graduate Brigitte Goeler-Slough, who knocked a one-timer into an open net, sending the Cardinals to the 3-2 victory.
The Bantams controlled the shot column, 40-28, and the faceoff circle, 32-31, during the contest. Leclair made 25 saves for Trinity, while Halloran stopped a game-high 38 shots for the Cardinals.
