Men's Soccer Edges St. John Fisher, 1-0

HARTFORD, Conn. – The Trinity College Men's Soccer squad used an early goal and a strong defensive showing to defeat visiting St. John Fisher University, 1-0, in a non-conference match at Trinity Soccer Field Saturday afternoon. The Bantams improve to 2-4 overall, while the Cardinals dip to 2-3-1 on the season.

The Bantams controlled the possession battle early in the contest, and a deflected shot in the box led to a Bantams corner kick. On the ensuing attempt, senior Owen McDermott served the ball to the front of the net, where sophomore Jack Murphy knifed through the SJF defense and laid out for header for the finish, giving Trinity a 1-0 lead with 40:55 remaining in the first half. The Bantams limited the Cardinals to four shots in the first half to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.

Trinity senior goalkeeper Matt Birnhak registered four saves in the second half to preserve his second career shutout in the 1-0 victory.

The Bantams outshot the Cardinals, 20-12, and held the advantage in corner kicks, 6-4. Birnhak posted five saves in the game, while St. John Fisher goalkeeper Christian Burkhart made five saves.

The Bantams will look to remain in the win column when they host the University of Hartford on Monday at 7:00 p.m. St. John Fisher travels to Alfred University Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
