Women's Soccer Falls to MIT in Season Opener

HARTFORD, Conn. – The Trinity College Women's Soccer team fell to visiting Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), 4-0, in their 2024 season opener at Trinity Soccer Field Tuesday night. The Bantams sit at 0-1 on the season, while the Engineers move to 2-0 overall.

MIT looked to crack the scoreboard in the third minute of action as junior Sean Luk placed a shot toward the upper corner, but Trinity first year goalkeeper Lily Bracken made a diving save to maintain the 0-0 score.

The Engineers broke through in the 31st minute as sophomore Arianna Doss delivered a pass from the wing to senior Meagan Rowlett in the middle of the box, where Rowlett tucked a shot past Bracken to put MIT ahead 1-0.

After heading into the half 1-0, the Engineers added to their advantage in the 54th minute when Trinity sophomore goalkeeper Zoe Tamborello denied a shot from sophomore Madeline Seebeck, but the loose ball trickled to Doss, who found an open net to extend the lead to 2-0. Less than five minutes later, Luk spotted senior Ashley English in the front of the net for a finish to set the score at 3-0.

The Bantams had an opportunity for their first tally in the 73rd minute as senior Katelyn Charette fired a shot off the post and then MIT sophomore goalkeeper Cassidy Jennings denied Trinity senior Sofia Quijada on the rebound attempt at the goal line to keep it 3-0. Engineers senior Natalie Barnouw added an unassisted strike in the 84th minute to seal the 4-0 win for the Engineers.

"Tonight was a difficult result to start our season, but we had many very good individual performances," said Trinity Head Coach Rachael Schroeder. "Unfortunately, we just couldn't put it together as a unit but that will come with time for our young team. We look ahead to our first conference game this weekend against Bates who we always play a tight game against."

The Engineers outshot the Bantams, 21-8, during the contest. Bracken logged four saves in her collegiate debut, while Tamborello added four saves in the second half of action. Jennings stopped five shots for MIT.

The Bantams will return to action when they open New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) play at Bates Saturday at Noon. MIT hosts Lesley Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
