Stickney Seals 2-1 Overtime Victory for Bantams

HARTFORD, CONN. — The Trinity College Field Hockey team secured an overtime victory over the visiting Smith College Pioneers, winning 2-1 on Wednesday night at Robin L. Sheppard Field. With the win, the Bantams start their season with a 1-0 record, while the Pioneers fall to 1-2 early in the season.

The game was scoreless through three quarters of play. Trinity dominated offensively, registering 10 shots, including five each in the first and second quarters, outshooting the Pioneers 10-7 in the first half. The Bantams also enjoyed a 5-0 corner advantage in the first half, keeping Smith from any corner opportunities.

Trinity came out strong in the second half, taking 15 shots in the third quarter with eight on goal. However, Smith's goalkeeper Rory Harper, who had an impressive 14 saves on the night, kept the Bantams at bay. Despite five corner attempts in the quarter, Trinity couldn't find the back of the cage.

The Pioneers broke the deadlock four minutes into the fourth quarter with a shot that slipped past Hayley Gable's left shoulder. Just ten minutes later, the Bantams equalized with a goal from a corner. Brooke DiBiase delivered a perfectly placed pass to Izzy Deveney, who blasted a shot from the top right of the circle to make it 1-1. DiBiase had a chance to win the game in the closing minutes, but her attempt was blocked by a Smith defender, sending the match into overtime.

In overtime, despite Smith having a 2-0 corner advantage, they couldn't get past Trinity's defense. It wasn't until the seventh minute of overtime that the Bantams managed to test the Pioneers' goal. Tatum Stickney seized an opportunity when her initial shot rebounded off Harper's pads. Stickney quickly regained possession and flicked the ball into the lower right corner of the cage, sealing a 2-1 overtime victory for Trinity.

The Trinity College Field Hockey team will return to action on Saturday, September 7th, when they face Bates College in their NESCAC opener at 12 PM in Lewiston, Maine.
