Women's Basketball Downs Williams, 80-65

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The Trinity College Women's Basketball team grabbed their first conference victory of the season with an 80-65 win at Williams College in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) action Sunday afternoon. The Bantams improve to 11-4 overall and 1-1 in conference action, while the Ephs slide to 10-4 and 1-1 on the season.
 
Sophomore Olivia Vick powered the Bantams offense with a career-high 33 points, shooting 8-of-15 from the floor, including 5-of-8 from three-point range, with three rebounds. Vick matched a program-record going a perfect 12-of-12 from the foul line. Junior Melissa Whitmore tallied a career-high 16 points with seven rebounds and two assists, while classmate Samantha Slofkiss grabbed a game-high eight rebounds with eight points.
 
Arianna Gerig led the Ephs with a team-high 22 points and a team-high six rebounds. Micah Walton registered 18 points, four assists and three rebounds. Tounkara added nine points, four rebounds and two assists.
 
The sides traded the lead back-and-forth during a tightly-contested first quarter of action as a pair of jumpers from sophomore Kiki Fossbender pulled the Bantams even at 10-10 with 2:30 on the clock. Vick netted five points along with a triple from Whitmore to put Trinity ahead 18-17 heading to the second quarter.
 
Down 21-18, Whitmore and Vick went back-to-back from beyond the arc to give Trinity the 24-21 advantage. Vick netted five points, followed by three-pointers from Whitmore and junior Theresa Twardosky to make it a 37-32 game at the half.
 
Trinity maintained their advantage early in the third quarter behind buckets from Whitmore and Twardosky but a 5-0 run from the Ephs set the score at 45-43. The Bantams ripped off a 10-3 run to close the third with a 55-46 lead.
 
The Bantams pulled away in the fourth as Vick netted eight straight points to push the Trinity lead to 66-54 with 6:18 to play. Four consecutive points from Slofkiss handed the Bantams their largest lead of the game, 70-54, at the 4:30 mark. The Bantams kept Williams at bay from the free throw line to secure the 80-65 win.
 
The Bantams won the battle on the glass, 42-32, and off the bench, 24-10. Trinity converted 24-of-54 (44.4%) from the floor, including 12-of- 20 (60%) from three-point, and 20-of-22 from the foul line. Williams shot 27-of-70 (38.6%) from the floor, 6-of-24 (25%) from three-point and 5-of-5 from the free throw stripe.
 
Trinity will return to action when they travel to M.I.T. for a non-conference road test on Tuesday, January 14. Tip-off is slated for 8:00 p.m.
