Women’s Hockey Tops Williams 2-1 with Two Goals in the Second Period

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The Trinity College women's ice hockey team defeated Williams College 2-1 on Friday night in a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) matchup. With the win, the Bantams improve to 7-6-0 overall and 5-2-0 in the NESCAC, while the Ephs drop to 7-5-0 overall and 1-4-0 in conference play.

Both teams registered five shots on goal in a scoreless first period. Trinity's Madeline Carter and Williams' Erin Pye were both solid in net, turning aside all attempts. At 17:47 of the opening frame, Williams' Kate Armstrong broke the deadlock with an even-strength goal, giving the Ephs a 1-0 lead heading into the second period.

The Bantams responded in the second. At 11:30, Trinity held a 10-3 shot advantage, and their aggressive offensive play began to challenge Pye. The Bantams capitalized on a 2-minute power-play at 13:34, with Jenny Guider scoring the equalizer, assisted by Paige Kehoe and Martina Exnerová. Just over three minutes later, at 16:50, Kate French put Trinity ahead with a goal, assisted by Annika Dyczkowski and Gabriela Gross. The Bantams carried a 2-1 lead into the third period.

Williams came out strong in the final frame, outshooting Trinity 13-2, and was awarded two power-play opportunities. However, they could not solve Carter, who made key saves to preserve the Bantams' 2-1 lead and secure the victory.

Carter allowed just one goal on 25 shots, finishing with 24 saves and a .960 save percentage. Pye tallied 20 saves in the loss for the Ephs.

Despite being outshot 25-20, Trinity won the faceoff battle 32-24. Marta Mazzocchi led all players with four blocked shots, contributing to the Bantams' 13-team block total, compared to Williams' seven.

Trinity and Williams will meet again on Saturday, January 18th, at 2 PM for the second game of the NESCAC series.
