HARTFORD, Conn. — The Trinity Women's Ice Hockey team overcame the visiting Johnson & Wales Wildcats with a 5-3 victory Tuesday evening at the Koeppel Sports Community Center. The win lifts Trinity's record to 9-6-0 on the season, while the Wildcats drop to 7-8-1 overall.
The Bantams struck first in the opening period with a power-play goal from Paige Kehoe at 11:22. Kehoe was assisted by Jelani Adorno and Jenny Guider. The Wildcats quickly responded, however, with a goal from Jordan Hopping just before the buzzer, evening the score at 1-1 as the first period came to a close.
The rink tilted in the Bantams favor in the second period, as the Bantams adding three more goals to build a 4-1 lead. Marta Mazzocchi put the Bantams back in front with a solo effort at 9:34. Guider then netted two goals in quick succession, the first at 14:54 and the second at 17:02, extending Trinity's advantage. The Wildcats managed to pull one back late in the frame, with Brynn Leahy scoring at 18:19 to make it 4-2 heading into the final period.
Guider completed her hat trick eight minutes into the third period, scoring a short-handed goal to give Trinity a 5-2 lead. The Wildcats weren't finished, though. With just under a minute remaining, Sophia Brea scored for Johnson & Wales to trim the deficit to 5-3, which would be the final score.
Trinity dominated the shot count, outshooting the Wildcats 34-14. The Bantams also won 36 faceoffs to Johnson & Wales' 24, though the Wildcats blocked 20 shots compared to Trinity's 6. Trinity's Madeline Carter finished with 11 saves and a save percentage of .786, while Wildcats goalie Leah White stopped 29 shots for a save percentage of .853.
Trinity Women's Ice Hockey will be on the road Friday January 31st to begin a two game NESCAC series against Colby College in Waterville, Me. Puck drop will be at 7PM.
