WSQ: Palacios Finishes Runner-Up at CSA Individual Championships

| By:

NEW YORK, NY – Trinity College Women's Squash had six athletes qualify for the College Squash Association Individual Championships, held in New York, NY, over the weekend (January 25-28).

The Bantams had four athletes competing in the Ramsay Cup, the top division featuring 32 of the best female squash players in the country. Kara Lincou, Jana Safy, Noa Romero, and Hannah Chukwu represented Trinity in this highly competitive bracket. Due to an injury, Malak Mastafa was forced to withdraw, allowing Kara Lincou to take her place.

Senior Lulu Palacios competed in the Holleran East Division.

Saturday Recap:

In the opening round, three of the four Bantams in the Ramsay Cup advanced. Noa Romero faced a rematch with her Princeton opponent, winning in four games (5-11, 11-5, 12-10, 11-8). Hannah Chukwu, who had lost to her opponent at Harvard, turned the tables this time, winning in four games, with a thrilling 19-17 first game (19-17, 4-11, 13-11, 12-10).

In the afternoon's second round of Ramsay Cup matches, Chukwu took a game off the #2 seed, playing smart, tactical squash, but ultimately fell in four sets (8-11, 9-11, 11-8, 5-11).

Romero, after going down 0-2, made a comeback to force a fifth game but was ultimately edged out by a tough opponent from Stanford, who advanced to the Championship match. Jana Safy also fought hard, but she lost in five games to the same opponent she faced at Harvard (10-12, 11-8, 12-10, 4-11, 5-11).

In the Holleran East Division, Palacios advanced to the semi-finals with a dominant 3-0 win over her Chatham opponent (11-4, 11-1, 11-2). In Sunday's early match, Palacios triumphed over NESCAC rival Tanmai Pathak from Amherst in four games (11-9, 9-11, 11-6, 11-4).

Sunday Recap:

Palacios then squared off against Mika Bardin from Yale in the Holleran East Division final. Despite a valiant effort, Palacios was defeated in four sets (11-5, 13-15, 8-11, 5-11), finishing as the Holleran East Division Runner-Up.

"I am super proud of all our players that participated in the CSA Individuals. They all pushed themselves and gave 100 percent effort in true Bantam fashion." Head Coach Lauren Patrizio said proudly!

Trinity College Women's Squash will host Columbia University on Saturday, February 1st for a 1:30PM meeting in the George A. Kellner Squash Courts.
