HARTFORD, Conn. – The 12th-ranked Trinity College Men's Ice Hockey team cruised to a 5-1 victory over visiting Amherst College on Friday evening in a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) matchup. With the win, the Bantams improved to 12-4-1 overall and 8-2-1 in conference play, while the Mammoths dropped to 7-9-1 overall and 4-6-1 in the NESCAC.
Trinity took control early when Spencer Korona scored at 12:42 of the first period, giving the Bantams a 1-0 lead. Korona's goal was assisted by Brendan Kimball. The Bantams outshot Amherst 8-5 in the opening frame, and Trinity goaltender Devon Bobak was sharp, stopping every shot he faced to keep a clean sheet. Despite having two power-play opportunities, including a five-minute major, Trinity was unable to capitalize on the man advantage in the first period.
The Bantams extended their lead seven minutes into the second period when Chase McInnis found the back of the net, assisted by Ty Broad, to make it 2-0. Amherst registered four shots on goal in the period, but Bobak remained perfect, keeping the Mammoths off the scoreboard. Amherst also had two power-play chances in the middle frame but couldn't convert.
Trinity added three more goals in the third period for insurance. Eamon Doheny scored at 5:50, followed by James Barbour's tally at 9:00 to make it 4-0. Korona then sealed his multi-goal game with a second goal at 18:29, giving the Bantams a commanding 5-0 lead. In the final minute of the game, Amherst managed to score a late goal when Murray tipped in a pass right in front of Bobak, cutting the deficit to 5-1. However, the Bantams built up a strong lead, securing the NESCAC victory.
The Bantams dominated the shot count, outshooting the Mammoths 60-37 overall, with 25 of those shots landing on goal. Amherst blocked 20 shots, led by Ben Ritter. Bobak finished with 13 saves, including five in the first period and four in each of the last two frames.
Trinity will return to action on Saturday, February 1st, when they host #8 Hamilton College at 4:00 p.m. in the Koeppel Community Sports Center.
