HARTFORD, Conn. – The Trinity College Volleyball team battled to a first set victory, but ultimately fell to visiting United States Coast Guard Academy, 3-1, in a non-conference clash at Oosting Gymnasium. The Bantams move to 11-9 on the season, while the Bears improve to 14-7 overall.
What Happened:
- Prior to the match, the Bantams honored their four departing seniors: Maggie Barnes, Caroline Howell, Sarai Davis and Ellie Gordon.
- The sides battled back-and-forth in a first set that featured 14 ties and seven lead changes, with the squads combining for 54 points as Trinity grabbed the 28-26 win.
- After the Bantams grabbed a 3-1 lead in the second set, the Bears ripped off a 15-5 run to harness a 16-8 lead. Trinity closed the gap to 16-14, but Coast Guard held serve with a 9-5 run to close the frame.
- Trinity took control early in the third set with a 10-4 lead. Trailing 12-6, the Bears utilized a 10-3 run to take a 16-15 lead. Trinity regained a 21-19 lead, but Coast Guard rallied with a 6-0 run to grab the 25-21 win.
- Play was close to begin the fourth set until the Bears ripped off five straight points to hold an 11-8 lead. Down 17-13, the Bantams took control with a 7-1 run to set the score at 20-18. After trading points, the Bears netted four straight points to pull ahead 24-23. A kill from Barnes for extra points, but Coast Guard notched two straight to seal the 26-24 win.
Inside the Numbers:
- The Bantams registered 51 kills with 48 assists, 96 digs, 13 blocks and four service aces.
- The Bears totaled 58 kills with 52 assists, 101 digs, 20 blocks and an ace.
- Gordon paced the Bantams attack with a match-high 19 kills and four blocks, while Barnes and Emma Ewart tallied 10 kills and one block apiece. Ewart nabbed a career-high 22 digs.
- Catalina Hendricks posted a double-double, dishing out a match-high 24 assists with a career-high 22 digs.
- Howell logged a double-double with 16 assists and 12 digs, while Chloe Gentile and Maya Hall delivered three blocks each.
- Amelia Matson led Coast Guard with a team-high 15 kills, seven digs and five blocks.
- Sarah Somer chipped in 12 kills and four blocks, and Corey Lemmer had a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs.
- Holly Davis recorded a team-high 24 assists and seven digs, while Ava Ahokovi tallied 22 helpers with 12 digs.
