Bantams Strike First but Fall to Tufts in NESCAC Battle

HARTFORD, Conn. — The Trinity College Field Hockey team struck first but was ultimately overtaken by the visiting Tufts University Jumbos, falling 5-1 in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) play on Robin L. Sheppard Field Saturday afternoon. The Bantams drop to 3-6 overall and 1-4 in league action, while the Jumbos improve to 8-2 with a 5-1 mark in the NESCAC.

What Happened:

  • Sophomore Brooke Dibiase put the Bantams ahead in the 19th minute of play early in the second quarter. The goal came off a corner when Dibiase redirected a shot from Fiona Murphy past Tufts goalkeeper Lydia Eastburn, with Murphy and inserter Maeve Hymovitz credited with assists.

  • Dibiase nearly doubled the lead in the 27th minute with another strong corner attempt, but her shot was blocked by a Jumbos defender. Tufts responded just before halftime, as Eleanor Helm converted the equalizer to knot the score at 1-1 heading into the break.

  • The Jumbos surged ahead in the third quarter, netting three goals to take a 4-1 advantage entering the final frame. Five minutes into the fourth, Lilly Ragusa added Tufts' fifth and final goal to seal the 5-1 victory.

Inside the Numbers:

  • Tufts held a 22-6 advantage in total shots, including a 10-2 edge in shots on goal.

  • The Jumbos earned 12 corners to Trinity's six.

  • Trinity goalkeeper Hayley Gable recorded four saves in 50:41 of action before Sydney Korkosz entered and added one save in relief.

Up Next:

  • The Bantams return to action on Wednesday, October 8, visiting No. 12 Wesleyan University for a 6 p.m. NESCAC clash. 

  • Trinity holds a 38-14-1 all-time record against the Cardinals, dating back to their inaugural meeting in 1971. 

The Bantams are 7-3 in their last 10 matchups, though Wesleyan has claimed the past two meetings, including a double-overtime decision in 2021.
