MALDEN, Mass. – The 14
th-ranked Trinity College Men's Ice Hockey team surrendered four third-period goals, falling to host Tufts University, 5-2, in a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) clash at Malden Valley Forum Saturday afternoon. The Bantams dip to 0-2 on the season, while the Jumbos improve to 2-0 overall.
What Happened:
- Just over eight minutes into the first period, the Jumbos lost control off the puck at the blue line, which the Bantams pursued behind the Tufts goal, and Spencer Korona spotted Ryan Panico across the goal mouth for the finish, staking Trinity to the 1-0 lead.
- With 16:46 remaining in the second period, the Bantams capitalized on a 5-on-3 advantage, as Trinity cycled the puck to Spencer Korona at the blue line, who snapped a shot over the shoulder of Tufts goaltender Gustav Bylin to extend the lead to 2-0.
- Two minutes later, the Bantams attempted to clear the puck from the zone on a Tufts power play, but Trace Norwell grabbed the puck before it crossed the blue line, passed it to Brenden Fennell, who spotted Max Resnick at the far post for the finish, cutting the Trinity lead to 2-1.
- The Jumbos found the equalizer with 13:55 to play as John Mulvhill put back a rebound on a wraparound shot that was denied by Bobak to knot the score at 2-2.
- With 6:10 on the clock, Cole Dubicki found Ethan Ullrick in the slot for a one-timer to put the Jumbos ahead 3-2.
- Tufts added insurance goals as Ullrick connected with Jonathan Horn on an outlet pass through the neutral zone, and Horn lifted a backhand over the reach of Bobak, followed by an empty net tally from Eli Pilosof to send the Jumbos to the 5-3 win.
Inside the Numbers:
- The Jumbos outshot the Bantams, 31-26, and both sides won 35 faceoffs during the contest.
- The Trinity powerplay converted on 1-of-6 opportunities, while Tufts went 1-for-3 with a man-advantage.
- Bobak made a game-high 26 saves, while Bylin stopped 24 shots for Tufts.
