HARTFORD, Conn. – The Trinity College Women's Basketball team fended off visiting SUNY-Brockport, 76-63, in a non-conference battle at Ray Oosting Gymnasium Saturday afternoon. The Bantams improve to 2-0 on the season, while the Golden Eagles dip to 1-2 overall.
What Happened:
- The Bantams took an early 10-2 lead in the first quarter behind four points from Marlo Simms.
- Leading 13-10 with 4:03 remaining in the first quarter, Trinity closed the frame on a 7-0 run to hold a 20-10 advantage entering the second quarter.
- Melissa Whitmore buried a three-point, and then Simms put in back-to-back layups as the Bantams pushed the lead to 28-13 at the 8:17 mark.
- Trinity maintained a double-digit lead during the second quarter behind buckets from Kiki Fossbender, Samantha Slofkiss and Amaya Pendleton to take a 37-24 lead into halftime.
- A layup from Fossbender at the 7:40 mark of the third quarter handed the Bantams their largest lead of the game, 44-26.
- Leading 52-35, the Golden Eagles chipped away at the deficit with an 11-4 run to close the gap to 56-46 after three periods.
- Simms sandwiched a pair of layups around a three-pointer from Whitmore to rebuild a 63-46 lead for Trinity.
- SUNY-Brockport mounted one final comeback bid with a 15-6 run, setting the score at 69-61 with 1:16 to play.
- Trinity held off the Golden Eagles from the foul line, connecting on 7-of-10 attempts down the stretch to lock up the 76-63 victory.
Inside the Numbers:
- The Bantams shot 34.2% (27-of-79) from the floor, including 8-of-25 (32%) from three-point range, and 14-of-25 (56%) from the foul line.
- The Golden Eagles converted 30.4% (24-of-79) from the field, shooting 9-of-32 (28.1%) from three-point and 6-of-8 (75%) from the free throw stripe.
- Trinity set a new program single-game record with 68 rebounds, besting the previous mark of 60, last accomplished against Bowdoin during the 2021-22 season.
- The Bantams controlled the paint (36-26), while SUNY-Brockport held the edge in bench points, 23-15.
- Simms logged her second straight double-double, setting new career-highs in points (19) and rebounds (15), including nine offensive rebounds.
- Whitmore registered her first career double-double, netting a career-high 19 points, connecting on 5-of-10 three-pointers, with a career-high 14 rebounds and a game-high four assists.
- Fossbender poured in a career-high 19 points and grabbed a career-high seven rebounds with two assists, while Slofkiss matched a career-high with 11 rebounds.
- Stephanie Jean-Baptiste paced the Golden Eagles offense with a team-high 14 points and seven rebounds.
- Mandy Brink added 12 points and four steals, while Peyton Maneri tallied five points, seven rebounds and a game-high five steals.
- Lila Lovgren and Addy VanDeWater notched six points apiece off the bench.
