NORTHAMPTON, MASS. – The Trinity College women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season, falling 72–61 to Smith College on Sunday afternoon in Ainsworth Gymnasium in Northampton, Mass. The Bantams drop to 5–1 overall, while the Pioneers improve to 5–0.
What Happened
- Trinity opened strong, surging to a 17–13 lead in the first quarter behind nine points from beyond the arc—two triples from Melissa Whitmore and one from Lucy Dorion.
- Smith responded with a 12–2 run in the second quarter to take a 25–19 lead with 3:54 remaining in the half. Maya Carnes trimmed the deficit to one, knocking down a three-pointer with one minute left to make it 28–27, but Smith's Uta Nakamura countered with a layup to give the Pioneers a 30–27 advantage heading into halftime.
- The Pioneers grew their largest lead of ten points in the third. Trinity narrowed the gap down to six after posting 19 points in the quarter to Smith's 22. The Pioneers maintained control in the fourth, outscoring the Bantams 20–15 to secure the 72–61 final.

- Trinity placed three players in double figures. Carnes led the way with 14 points on 5–of–13 shooting, adding three rebounds, two assists, and four steals.
- Kiki Fossbender contributed 13 points, went perfect at the foul line, and grabbed three rebounds.
- Whitmore added 12 points—all from three-point range—finishing 4–of–8 from deep with a team-high eight rebounds.
- Smith's Felicia Fongernie posted a game-high 19 points, while Virginia Johnson and Bre'Aria Cannon each collected nine rebounds. Nakamura (17) and Johnson (10) also finished in double figures for the Pioneers.
