Trinity Edges Colby in Shootout After Overtime Wash

WATERVILLE, ME – The 13th-ranked Trinity College Men's Ice Hockey team traveled to Colby College on Saturday evening, resulting in a 1-1 tie after a single overtime period. The Bantams ultimately won 2-1 in a shootout. This tie brings Trinity's overall record to 14-6-2 and 10-4-2 in NESCAC play, while the Mules now stand at 12-5-5 overall and 7-5-4 in conference action.

In the first two periods, the Bantams outshot the Mules 27-18, with an opening frame 18-5 advantage in shots on goal. Trinity had a power-play opportunity at 11:20 in the first period, generating three shots on goal, but Colby's Cooper Rautenstrauch stood strong in net, denying all attempts. Three minutes into the second period, the Bantams were awarded another man-advantage, but they were unable to capitalize on it.

The breakthrough came in the third period, when senior Alexander Mozian scored during a power play at 7:57 to give the Bantams a 1-0 lead. However, just over two minutes later, the Mules responded with a power-play goal of their own by Massimo Gentile, tying the game at 1-1.

The game continued into overtime, with both teams managing just one shot on goal during the five-minute extra period. Trinity's Eamon Doheny had a chance for the Bantams, while Colby's Connor Gallagher tested Trinity's goalie, Devon Bobak. Both goaltenders, Bobak and Rautenstrauch, made key saves, keeping the score tied at 1-1 as overtime ended.

With the game still knotted at 1-1, the NESCAC showdown moved to a shootout, where each team had three attempts. Bantams forward Spencer Korona scored on the first attempt, followed by Gentile, who equalized for the Mules, making it 1-1 in the shootout. Trinity's James Barbour then gave the Bantams a 2-1 advantage with the second shot, and despite two more attempts from Colby, they were unable to score, giving Trinity the victory.

Trinity outshot Colby 42-27, registering a .553 shooting accuracy (42-76) compared to the Mules' .443 (27-61). The Bantams also led in blocked shots, 18-17, but were outpaced in faceoff victories, with Colby winning 45 faceoffs to Trinity's 32. Bobak finished with 26 saves, recording a .963 save percentage, while Rautenstrauch made 41 saves and earned a .976 save percentage.
