MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The 14th-ranked Trinity College Men's Ice Hockey team earned a 5-3 victory over host Wesleyan University after a dominant second-period surge in a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) clash at Spurrier-Snyder Rink on Saturday afternoon. The Bantams completed a weekend sweep of the Cardinals, improving their record to 16-6-2 overall and 12-4-2 in NESCAC play, while Wesleyan falls to 6-15-3 overall and 5-12-1 in conference action.
Senior Alexander Mozian opened the scoring for the Bantams with an even-strength goal just 4:29 into the first period. Wesleyan responded quickly, with Danny Markham finding the back of the net to tie the game at 8:34. The Cardinals took the lead with their second goal sent in by Owen Sweet, tipping the scale in Wesleyan's favor heading into the intermission.
In the second period, Trinity wasted no time evening the score. Senior Richard Boysen struck less than a minute into the frame, tying it at 2-2. Wesleyan's Jack Marottolo regained the lead for the Cardinals at 6:59, making it 3-2.
With under four minutes remaining in the second period, the Bantams answered once again. Theodore Griffin scored the equalizer at 16:42, and just two minutes later, Ty Broad gave Trinity the lead, 4-3, for the first time since Mozian's opening goal.
Ryan Panico added a crucial insurance goal late in the third period to seal the 5-3 victory, extending the Bantams' lead to two goals with minimal time left on the clock.
Trinity outshot Wesleyan 58-45, including a 35-25 advantage in shots on goal. The Bantams also dominated in faceoff wins, with 39 compared to 25 for the Cardinals. Trinity's defense was solid, blocking 12 shots, with Joseph Harney leading the way with three blocks. In goal, Bobak made 22 saves for the Bantams, while Wesleyan's Patrick McDevitt stopped 30 shots.
With the win, the Bantams secured the No. 2 seed in the upcoming NESCAC Tournament. Trinity will host seventh-seeded Middlebury College on Saturday, March 1st, at 4:00 PM in the Koeppel Community Sports Center.
