Four-Goal Run Powers Bantams Past Springfield, 6–4

HARTFORD, Conn. – A four-goal surge lifted the Trinity College field hockey team to a 6–4 victory over visiting Springfield College on Wednesday evening under the lights at Robin L. Sheppard Field. With the win, the Bantams move to 2–2 on the year, while the Pride fall to 4–2.

What Happened:

  • Sophomore forward Claire Griffith set the tone early with back-to-back goals to give Trinity a quick 2–0 advantage. Griffith's first tally came off a sequence initiated by senior Fiona Murphy, who fed Nina Falkson on the right endline. Falkson slipped a pass across to Griffith, who one-timed the ball past Springfield goalkeeper Sam Orcutt. Moments later, Griffith doubled the lead with an off-balance strike off her left foot after collecting a loose ball in the circle.
  • Springfield responded with three unanswered goals to take a 3–2 lead. The first came in the 7th minute after a Bantam turnover led to a shot by Ava Coppola that was saved by Trinity keeper Hayley Gable, but the rebound fell to Emma Spagnolo, who tucked it into the back corner. The Pride equalized at 17:32 when Rachel Simkewicz buried a feed from Clare Moore following a scrappy corner battle. Simkewicz then struck again just minutes later, finishing on her own rebound after Spagnolo created space along the endline and set up the initial attempt.
  • Trinity evened the score just before halftime, as first-year Lily Vincent netted her first collegiate goal off a rebound from Julia Lambert's shot to make it 3–3 at the break.
  • The Bantams regained control in the second half. Junior Brooke DiBiase put Trinity ahead 4–3 with a slick reverse flick in the third quarter. The offense kept rolling in the fourth, as sophomore Riley Harrington tallied her first of the season with a spin move and finish into the left corner, and transfer Alison Gerber added her first career goal with the Bantams off a corner strike from the top of the circle to extend the lead to 6–3.
  • Springfield pulled one back late when Nicolette Morlock converted a penalty stroke, but the Bantams held firm to close out the 6–4 win.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Trinity outshot Springfield 27–13, including a 14–9 edge in shots on goal.
  • Gable recorded 4 saves for the Bantams, while Orcutt made 7 for the Pride.
  • Senior Lucy Werner picked up her first defensive save of the season, and the fifth of her career.
  • The Bantams earned double the corners of Springfield, 8–4.
