Bobcats Edge Bantams, 2-1 in NESCAC play

Hartford, Conn. – The Trinity College field hockey team hosted Bates College for its New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) opener on Saturday morning, falling to the Bobcats, 2-1, at Robin L. Sheppard Field. Bates improves to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the NESCAC, while the Bantams move to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

What Happened:

  • Bates struck first at the 11:44 mark of the opening quarter when Amy Labelle converted her first goal of the season following a blocked shot by Rose Gordon off a penalty corner.
  • Trinity was awarded three penalty corners in the first half, outpacing Bates' lone attempt, but could not find the equalizer. Bantams' sophomore defender Eva McKelvey came up big defensively, recording her first defensive save of the year to deny a second Bobcat goal.
  • In the third quarter, Bates doubled its lead as Elsa Copeland redirected Gordon's penalty corner drive into the cage, making it 2-0 heading into the final frame.
  • Trinity broke through in the fourth, when senior Maeve Hymovitz redirected a drive from junior Alison Gerber at the left post for her first goal of the season. 
  • With 4:02 remaining, the Bantams pulled goalkeeper Hayley Gable for an extra attacker but could not find the tying goal. In the final 10 seconds, Bates was awarded back-to-back penalty corners, but the Bantam defense held strong as Hymovitz registered a defensive save to keep the score at 2-1.
  • Gable finished the game with five saves in 55:58 minutes of action in the cage.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Trinity held an 8-6 advantage in penalty corners.
  • Bates attempted 12 shots (9 on goal), while the Bantams tallied 8 shots (4 on goal).
  • Gable posted 5 saves, while Trinity defenders added 2 defensive saves.

The Bantams return to Robin L. Sheppard Field on Saturday, Sept. 13, to host Middlebury College in an 11 a.m. NESCAC matchup.
