#18 Women's Basketball Halts Babson, 61-55

BABSON PARK, Mass. – The 18th-ranked Trinity College Women's Basketball team outlasted host Babson College, 61-55, in a non-conference battle at Staake Gymnasium Tuesday night. The Bantams rise to 12-4 overall, while the Beavers slide to 8-6 on the year.
 
What Happened:
  • Babson took advantage early, jumping to a 7-2 lead over the opening three minutes. The Bantams rallied as a jumper from Marlo Simms capped an 11-4 run to put Trinity ahead 13-11.
  • Trailing 16-15 in the second quarter, the Bantams ripped off a quick 9-0 run, paced by five points from Simms, to regain a 24-16 lead with 5:57 on the clock. Simms netted six straight points, followed by a bucket from Avery Marzo, to put Trinity ahead 32-23 at the break.
  • The Beavers worked at the deficit in the third quarter, outscoring the Bantams, 16-10, during the frame. Babson opened the third with a 6-2 run to close the gap to 34-29 at the 5:23 mark. The sides exchanged buckets over the next five minutes with Kiki Fossbender scoring four points for Trinity, while Julie St. Laurent added four for Babson to make it 42-39 heading to the fourth.
  • The Beavers maintained their momentum in the fourth as back-to-back baskets from Alessa Mendoza gave Babson a 46-45 edge with 6:33 to play.
  • The squads exchanged the lead three times over the next three minutes until a layup from Simms and a triple from Marzo handed the Bantams the lead for good, 56-51, with 2:40 to play.
  • Babson pulled within a possession twice in the final minutes but four points from Fossbender kept the Beavers at bay to secure the 61-55 victory.
 
Inside the Numbers:
  • The Bantams connected on 43.9% (25-of-57) from the floor, 27.3% (3-of-11) from three-point, and 72.7% (8-of-11) from the free throw line.
  • Babson shot 33.3% (24-of-72) from the field, 16.7% (4-of-24) from long-range, and 37.5% (3-of-8) from the foul line.

  • Simms registered her tenth double-double of the season with a game-high 17 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
  • Fossbender posted her fourth straight game in double figures, netting 16 points with five rebounds, while Marzo collected 14 points, six rebounds and a team-high three steals.
  • St. Laurent led the Beavers with a team-high 14 points and five rebounds, and Rylie Rosenberg added 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
 
Up Next:
  • The Bantams will return to action when they travel to Amherst College (9-3, 0-1 NESCAC) for a conference tilt on Friday, January 16 at 7:00 p.m.
  • All-time, Trinity owns a 19-32 record against the Mammoths, dating back to their first meeting during the 1977-78 season.
