#1 Men's Basketball Edged at Wesleyan, 64-62

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The top-ranked Trinity College Men's Basketball team had their program-high 32-game win streak come to an end as host Wesleyan University edged the Bantams, 64-62, in a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) clash at Silloway Gymnasium Saturday afternoon. The Bantams move to 17-1 overall and 4-1 in conference, while the Cardinals sit at 15-4 and 5-0 on the season.
 
What Happened:
  • The Cardinals held a 14-9 advantage after the opening seven minutes behind 12 points from Sam Pohlman.
  • Trevor McDonald netted five straight points off the bench to help Trinity close the gap to 18-14, but a pair of three-pointers from Pohlman helped Wesleyan build a 26-14 lead with 8:20 on the clock.
  • A driving layup from Henry Vetter capped a 7-0 run from the Bantams to trim the gap to 26-21 at the 5:11 mark, but three-pointers from Fritz Hauser and Oscar Edelman regained a 34-24 lead. Drew Lazarre chipped in five points to help Trinity close the deficit to 38-31 at the half.
  • McDonald and Vetter propelled the Bantams offense early in the second half with seven and five points, respectively, to pull Trinity within a point, 44-43, with 14:03 remaining. 12 consecutive points from Jaalan Watson put Wesleyan ahead, 56-52 at the 9:40 mark, but Vetter used a five-point spurt to fuel a 7-0 run to give Trinity a 59-56 with 7: 05 to play.
  • Wesleyan utilized an 8- 1 run over the next five minutes to possess a 64-60 lead with less than two minutes to play. Vetter knocked down a pair of free throws to bring Trinity within two points, 64-62, but the Bantams came up empty on two three-pointers in the final minute as Wesleyan grabbed the 64-62 win.

  • The Bantams converted 37.1% (23-of-62) from the field, including 30.8% (8-of-26) from three-point, and 66.7% (8-of-12) from the free throw line.
  • The Cardinals shot 38.3% (23-of-60) from the floor, 37.5% (9-of-24) from long-range, and 81.8% (9-of-11) from the foul line.

  • Vetter helmed the Bantams offense with a team-high 21 points, shooting 7-of-14 from the floor, with three assists, three rebounds and two steals.
  • McDonald netted a season-high 12 points, connecting on 5-of-6 attempts, with five rebounds, while Jarrel Okorougo added 10 points, five rebounds and three blocks.
  • Pohlman led all scorers with a game-high 22 points with four rebounds and four assists, while Watson had 16 points and Zach Wolinski tallied 14 points and five rebounds for Wesleyan.
  • The Bantams 32-game win streak broke the previous program-record set from November 10, 2023 to January 27, 2024.
