Women's Basketball Whips Wesleyan, 65-45

HARTFORD, Conn. – The Trinity College Women's Basketball team rolled past visiting Wesleyan, University, 65-45, in a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) tilt at Ray Oosting Gymnasium Saturday afternoon. The Bantams rise to 14-5 overall and 3-2 in the NESCAC, while the Cardinals slide to 6-11, and 1-4 on the season.
 
What Happened:
  • Trailing 2-0 after the opening possession, the Bantams ripped off a 12-0 run, fueled by five points from Maya Carnes and four points from Marlo Simms, to grab a 12-2 lead at the 4:55 mark. The Cardinals rallied with an 8-0 run to trim the deficit to 12-10, but Trinity outscored Wesleyan, 8-2, down the stretch to hold a 20-12 lead after the first quarter.
  • The Bantams carried their momentum into the second quarter as Lucy Dorion netted seven points as part of a 9-2 run to build a 29-14 lead. Kiki Fossbender scored six straight points for Trinity to give the Bantams a 35-18 lead at the break.
  • Marlo Simms put in back-to-back buckets, followed by a triple from Dorion to kick off the Trinity offense in the third quarter. The Cardinals outscored Trinity, 9-8, over the final seven minutes, but a buzzer-beating layup from Carnes gave the Bantams a 52-29 advantage heading into the fourth.
  • Leading 52-31 at the 9:16 mark, Trinity rattled off an 8-0 run over the next three minutes to extend the gap to 60-31. Amaya Pendleton knocked down a three-pointer to help secure the 65-45 victory.
 
Inside the Numbers:
  • The Bantams shot 43.9% (25-of-57) from the floor, including 47.1% (8-of-17) from three-point, and 87.5% (7-of-8) from the foul line.
  • The Cardinals connected on 23.8% (15-of-63) from the field, 11.8% (2-of-17) from beyond the arc, and 86.7% (13-of-15) from the free throw stripe.

  • Dorion led the Bantams with a career-high 18 points, shooting a career-high 6-of-12 from the floor and a career-high 4-of-5 from three-point, with three assists, two steals and two rebounds.
  • Simms registered her 11th double-double of the season with 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, and Carnes added nine points with a career-high eight rebounds and four assists.
  • Marzo chipped in seven points and five rebounds, while Fossbender tallied eight points and Samantha Slofkiss had seven rebounds off the bench.
  • Olivia Quinn paced the Cardinals with a team-high 11 points, two rebounds and two assists, and Alli Jones notched six rebounds with a team-high eight rebounds.

  • The Bantams will return to the court when they host Connecticut College (11-7, 2-3 NESCAC) in a NESCAC clash at Oosting Gymnasium on Friday, January 30 at 7:00 p.m.
