#18 Women's Basketball Drops Nail-Bitter to Middlebury, 64-62

HARTFORD, Conn. – The 18th-ranked Trinity College Women's Basketball fell to visiting Middlebury College, 64-62, in a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) clash at Ray Oosting Gymnasium Friday night. The Bantams move to 10-4 on the season and 0-1 in conference, while the Panthers sit at 10-3 overall and 1-0 in the NESCAC.
 
What Happened:
  • The Panthers controlled play early in the first quarter as Sarah Chenette netted four points to put Middlebury ahead 8-4. The Bantams battled back with a 12-4 run to close the period with a 16-12 lead.
  • Trinity carried their momentum in the second quarter with an 8-2 run as a driving layup from Fiona Neilon put the Bantams on top 24-14 with 7:09 on the clock. Middlebury erased the deficit over the next seven minutes behind a 17-6 run with six points from Gabby Stuart to hold a 31-30 advantage at the break.
  • The third quarter was tightly contested with no more than four points separating the squads. The period featured seven ties, but Trinity used four-point efforts from Avery Marzo and Maya Carnes to regain a 47-43 lead entering the fourth quarter.
  • Middlebury opened the fourth on a 9-2 run on buckets from Isla Moore and Chenette, but Trinity grabbed a 61-58 lead at the 2:02 mark after back-to-back baskets from Marlo Simms and four straight points from Kiki Fossbender. The Panthers capitalized on a pair of Bantam turnovers in the final minutes to secure the 64-62 win.
 
Inside the Numbers:
  • The Bantams shot 42.1% (24-of-57) from the field, coming up empty from three-point (0-of-10), and 77.8% (14-of-18) from the foul line.
  • The Panthers connected on 40.6% (26-of-64) from the floor, going 1-of-15 from beyond the arc, and 68.8% (11-of-16) from the free throw stripe.

  • Trinity had four scorers in double figures, led by 13 points and seven rebounds from Simms.
  • Fossbender tallied 12 points, three rebounds and two assists, Marzo added 10 points, two rebounds and two assists, while Carnes netted 10 points with three rebounds.
  • Chenette registered a game-high 19 points with a game-high nine rebounds, while Moore chipped in 15 points, six rebounds and a game-high four assists.
