HARTFORD, Conn. – The Trinity College Women's Basketball team came up just short in their comeback bid, falling to visiting Tufts University, 59-55, in a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) clash at Ray Oosting Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.
What Happened:
- Prior to the game, the Bantams honored their departing senior class: Maya Carnes, Hannah Boone, Lucy Dorion, Amaya Pendleton, Samantha Slofkiss, and Melissa Whitmore.
- Trinity grabbed an early 10-5 lead behind four points from Marlo Simms and three-pointers from Carnes and Whitmore. The Jumbos rallied back with a 16-6 run to close the first quarter with a 21-16 lead.
- The Bantams used buckets from Dorion and Whitmore to trim the gap to 21-20, but the Jumbos maintained their edge with a 9-4 run to take a 30-24 lead into halftime.
- Tufts continued to expanded their lead with a 13-5 run during the opening six minutes of the third quarter, building a 43-29 lead. The Bantams offense kicked into gear, closing the frame with an 11-4 run, capped by a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Dorion to make it a 47-40 game heading to the fourth.
- Simms sandwiched a pair of layup around a three-pointer from Whitmore to help Trinity knot the game at 47-47 with 7:59 to play. Tied at 49-49, the Jumbos netted six unanswered points to take a 55-49 lead with 2:02 remaining. Five points from Whitmore kept Trinity within a possession, 56-54, but the Jumbos closed out the 59-55 win from the free throw line.
Inside the Numbers:
- The Bantams shot 40% (20-of-50) from the field, 28.6% (6-of-21) from three-point range, and 90% (9-of-10) from the free throw stripe.
- The Jumbos connected on 38.9% (21-of-54) from the floor, 30% (6-of-20) from beyond the arc, and 68.8% (11-of-16) from the foul stripe.

- Simms logged her 12th double-double of the season with a game-high 16 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.
- Whitmore tallied 15 points, six rebounds, four blocks and two assists, while Carnes added five points, five rebounds and a game-high six assists.
- Tufts had three scorers in double figures, led by Tessa Lozner with a team-high 15 points and four rebounds.
- Congdon added 14 points, five steals, four assists and two rebounds, while Kolkhorst chipped in 13 points with a team-high eight rebounds and four steals.

- The Bantams will be back on the hardwood when they travel to Bates College (17-2, 4-1 NESCAC) for a conference tilt on Friday, February 6 at 7:00 p.m.
- All-time, Trinity owns a 13-26 record against the Bobcats, dating back to their first meeting during the 1978-79 season.
- The Bobcats have won four of their last five meetings against the Bantams, including a 63-46 win in Hartford last season.
