Baseball Sweeps Hartford In Season Opening Twinbill

HARTFORD, Conn. – The Trinity College Baseball team opened the 2026 season with a pair of victories over visiting University of Hartford, 8-2 & 12-0, in a non-conference doubleheader at Murren Family Field at DiBenedetto Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Bantams sit at 2-0 on the season, while the Hawks dip to 0-2.
 
What Happened (Game 1):
  • The Bantams plated their first runs of the campaign as Will Sawyer brought home Aidan Stern on a bases loaded hit-by-pitch, and then Tyler Bernstein scampered across the plate on a passed ball to make it 2-0. Aidan Stevenson added an RBI groundout to hand Trinity the 3-0 lead.
  • After the Hawks cut the deficit to 3-1 on an RBI double from Alek Popovich in the top of the third, the Bantams responded with a solo home run from Sawyer, followed by an RBI single from Timmy Domizio to rebuild a 5-1 advantage.
  • Domizio struck again in the bottom of the fifth, launching a three-run home run to deep centerfield, extending the lead to 8-1. The Hawks posted an RBI sac fly from Cameron Boardman in the eighth en route to the 8-2 final.
 
Inside the Numbers (Game 1):
  • The Bantams plated eight runs on eight hits, while the Hawks garnered a pair of runs on seven hits.
  • Domizio came up a single shy of the cycle, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs and a run scored.
  • Sawyer went 1-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Aidan Stevenson was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.
  • Joseph Capano went four innings in the start, allowing one run on three this with five strikeouts, while Andrew Oppenheimer (1-0) earned his first career win in relief, scattering three hits across four scoreless frames.
 
What Happened (Game 2):
  • The Bantams jumped on the Hawks early as Aidan Stern and Bernstein blasted back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the first to stake Trinity to a 2-0 lead.
  • The Bantams tacked on four runs in the bottom of the second, beginning with a two-run single through the right side from Bernstein. Dylan Schnitzer followed with an RBI single, and then Sawyer delivered an RBI groundout to extend the lead to 6-0.
  • Adam Niman came home on a double steal in the bottom of the third, Cole Mascolo smacked a three-run double in the fourth, followed by an RBI triples from Brett Stone and Luis Saldivia as the lead swelled to 12-0.
 
Inside the Numbers (Game 2):
  • The Bantams drove in 12 runs on 11 hits, including eight extra-base hits, while the Hawks were limited to three hits in seven innings.
  • Bernstein went 3-for-3 at the dish with three runs scored and three RBIs, while Schnitzer and Saldivia each tallied two hits, a run scored and an RBI.
  • Stern recorded two hits with two runs and an RBI, while Stone scored twice and brought home a run.
  • Drew McGowan (1-0) logged the victory on the hill, allowing two hits with three punchouts in five innings of work, and Tyler Fahey surrendered one hit in two innings of relief.
Up Next:
  • The Bantams will be back on the diamond when they host Brandeis University (4-0) at Murren Family Field at DiBenedetto Stadium on Tuesday, March 3 at 3:30 p.m.
