HARTFORD, Conn. – The Trinity College Baseball team grabbed a pair of victories over visiting Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), 5-4 & 16-7, in a non-conference doubleheader at Murren Family Field at DiBenedetto Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Bantams rise to 4-1 on the season, while the Engineers slide to 0-5 overall.
What Happened (Game 1):
- The Bantams cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the first as Tyler Bernstein drew a four-pitch walk, stole second and third and scored on a throwing error to stake Trinity to the 1-0 lead.
- The Engineers evened the score in the top of the fourth behind a solo home run from Owen Malone. The Bantams regained the lead in the bottom of the frame behind a sac fly from Aidan Stevenson and Dylan Schnitzer scoring on a double-steal to put Trinity ahead 3-1.
- MIT knotted things again at 3-3 in the top of the fifth as Louis Hernandez delivered an RBI single, and then scored on an RBI double from Joey Severson.
- In the bottom of the sixth, Schnitzer drew a leadoff walk, and then touch home three batters later on an RBI single from Timmy Domizio. The Engineers answered with their final three outs in the seventh as Dalton Chi singled and scored on sac fly from Hernandez to make it a 4-4 game.
- The deciding run from the Bantams came as Cole Mascolo knocked a pinch hit single, advanced on a failed pickoff and flyout, and then scored on a passed ball to give Trinity the 5-4 walkoff victory.
What Happened (Game 2):
- The Bantams came out swinging in the nightcap as Bernstein belted a two-run home run to right-centerfield, followed by an RBI single from Aidan Stevenson to hand Trinity the 3-0 lead in the first.
- Trinity added four runs in the second as Aidan Stern drove an RBI triple to right-center, and then Dylan Schnitzer and William Sawyer delivered RBI singles. Sawyer cross home on an RBI groundout from Timmy Domizio to extend the Bantams lead to 7-0.
- In the third, Schnitzer brought home Pete Beisel on an RBI fielder's choice, and Aidan Stevenson ripped an RBI double down the left field line to set the score at 10-0.
- The Engineers plated two runs in the fourth as Malone knocked an RBI single and then scored on an RBI triple from Maximo Del Pino to cut the deficit to 10-2.
- The Bantams responded with two runs in the fourth and two runs in the fifth to expand the gap to 14-3.
- Hanvin Lee and Yamato Takahashi scored a trio of runs for MIT in the eighth, but Schnitzer added an RBI fielder's choice and scored on an error en route to the 16-7 victory.
Inside the Numbers:
- Stern posted a .667 average (4-6) with two extra-base hits, four runs scored, and a stolen base. He went 3-for-3, falling a home run short of the cycle in the nightcap.
- Bernstein went 2-for-4 with three runs, 2 RBIs and two stolen bases, while Schnitzer scored five times, drove in three runs and swiped two bags in the wins.
- Sawyer scored three times and added two stolen bases, and Stevenson went 4-for-6 with with four RBIs.
- In the opener, Capano struck out five batters and allowed three runs in 4.2 innings of work, and Tyler Fahey (1-0) earned the win in relief.
- Drew McGowan took the bump in game two, allowing two runs on three hits with two strikeouts in four innings with Andrew Oppenheimer picked up the win during 3.1 innings out of the bullpen.
Up Next:
- The Bantams will be back in action when they head to Florida for Spring Break, opening their trip against Edgewood University on Saturday, March 14 at 10:00 a.m.
- This will be the first meeting between the squads since Trinity grabbed a 12-0 win during the 2001 season.
