LEWISTON, Maine – A strong second-half surge by the Bobcats lifted host Bates College to a 14-8 win over the Trinity College Bantams in a New England Small College Athletic Conference matchup Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, Trinity moves to 1-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play, while Bates improves to 5-0 (2-0 NESCAC).
How It Happened
- The NESCAC foes traded momentum early, combining for nine goals in a fast-paced opening quarter.
- Bates jumped out to a 3-0 lead behind two goals from Connor Hartman and a tally from Riley McClure, who also assisted on the Bobcats' second goal.
- Trinity answered with an impressive five-goal run to seize control. Miles Harvey started the stretch with 7:00 remaining in the quarter before first-year Billy Gerne added back-to-back unassisted goals to tie the game at 3-3 with 4:31 on the clock.
- Bo Page then gave the Bantams their first lead of the afternoon, finishing a pass from Harvey at the 2:52 mark to make it 4-3.
- The lead was short-lived, however, as McClure responded with two goals in the final two minutes of the quarter to put Bates back in front, 5-4, heading into the second.
- Trinity reclaimed the advantage early in the second quarter with goals from Jay Ottomanelli and Ben Wong, assisted by Jake Connors and Duncan Rider, respectively, to make it 6-5.
- Bates responded with a four-goal run to regain control, receiving goals from McClure, McCann, and Goldbach to push the lead back to three.
- The Bobcats extended their momentum in the third quarter, building a 13-7 advantage. Wong briefly sparked the Bantams with a player-up goal assisted by Harvey early in the half, but Bates continued to add to its lead.
- Both teams found the back of the net once in the fourth quarter, as Hartman scored for Bates and Trinity's Rory McAloon tallied the Bantams' final goal, sealing the 14-8 result.
