MEDFORD, Mass. – The Trinity College Baseball team locked up the second-seed in the East Division for the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championship Tournament next weekend after splitting a doubleheader with host Tufts University at Sol Gittleman Field Saturday afternoon. The Bantams sit at 23-10 on the season, and 8-4 in conference play, while the Jumbos sit at 23-8 and 7-3 in the NESCAC.
What Happened:
- In the opener, the Bantams looked to take an early lead, but Trinity left the bases loaded in the second inning, and then Tyler Bernstein was thrown out trying to steal home in the third.
- After nearly four scoreless innings, Tufts grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double from Jesse McCullough. The Jumbos tacked on another run in the fifth on an RBI double from Owen McKiernan.
- The Bantams loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the sixth but came up empty. McCollough added an RBI sac fly in the sixth to push Tufts ahead 3-0. In the seventh, Bernstein singled, stole second and then raced home on a two-out double from Aidan Stern, cutting the gap to 3-1.
- A two-run home run from Jack Kamin handed Tufts a 2-0 lead in the nightcap. The Bantams chipped away at the deficit with an RBI sac fly from Pete Beisel in the second to make it a 2-1 game.
- After two scoreless frames, the Trinity bats erupted for eight runs in the top of the fifth as Tyler Bernstein laced a leadoff double down the line, and then scored on an RBI single from Aidan Stern to knot the contest at 2-2. The Bantams took control with run-scoring knocks from Timothy Domizio and William Sawyer, who then scored on a two-run double from Pete Beisel to extend the lead to 7-2. Beisel scored on a single from Bernstein, followed by an RBI double from Dylan Schnitzer.
- Trinity continued to slug as Domizio launched a solo home run and Theodore McLaughlin ripped an RBI single up the middle in the sixth. The Jumbos plated three runs in the seventh to close the gap to 11-5. The Bantams tacked on insurance runs with RBI knocks from Sawyer in the eighth, and Schnitzer and Andrew Park in the ninth to send Trinity to the 14-5 win.
Inside the Boxscore:
- The Bantams plated one run on six hits with an error in the opener, and 14 runs on 19 hits, including six extra-base hits in the finale.
- Tufts scored three runs on six hits in game one, and five runs on 12 hits in the nightcap.
- Stern went 5-for-9 on the day with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored. Schnitzer posted four hits with two RBIs, and Bernstein posted four hits and two runs scored.
- Sawyer tallied three hits with two RBIs and two runs scored, Domizio scored two runs on two hits with two runs scored, while Park and Stevenson chipped in two hits with an RBI.
- Andrew Oppenheimer (6-1) earned the victory in the finale, allowing two runs on hits with two strikeouts in six innings of work, while Tyler Fahey delivered two innings of scoreless relief with two strikeouts.
- Drew McGowan (4-4) surrendered two runs on six hits with two strikeouts in five innings in the opener.
