New London Conn. - The visiting Trinity College Bantams scored
16 straight points in the first half as they outscored the United
States Coast Guard Academy Bars, 26-3, in a span of just over 11
minutes turning an early deficit into a 55-45 win in women's
basketball action this evening. Trinity improves to 2-0,
while the Bears fall to 0-1.
The Bears jumped out to an 8-2 lead with 16:35 left in the first
half as juniors Leslie Hunt and Sabrina Taylor each connected on
3-pointers. Trinity then scored eight straight and took the
lead 10-8 on a basket by junior Claire Arnstein
(Hicksville, N.Y.) with 14:08 left. The Bantams
led 12-11 with 9:39 left before scoring 16 straight for a 28-11
lead with 5:20 left in half. Coast Guard scored 12 of the
final 16 points in the first half to pull to within 32-23 at
halftime.
The first seven minutes of the second half saw just
six points, all by Coast Guard, as the Bears pulled to within 32-29
following a pair of free throws from junior Melissa Martinelli with
13:02 left in the game. Trinity answered with six straight
points as junior Jessica Sims (Peabody,
Mass.) scored Trinity's first two points of the
second half on a pair of free throws with 12:34 left before
freshman Michelle Royals (Torrington,
Conn.) scored back-to-back buckets giving the Bantams
a 38-29 lead with 11:06 remaining. Coast Guard, behind the
play of Martinelli, who had 15 of her game-high 20 points in the
second half, pulled to within three at 42-39 with 5:44 left on a
Martinelli basket before Trinity used an 8-2 run taking a 50-41
lead with 3:05 to go.
Freshman Kaitlin Ciarleglio (Waterbury,
Conn.) had a career-high 14 points to lead Trinity
while Sims led the Bantams with six rebounds. Sophomore
Jennifer Tamminen added nine points for Coast Guard while senior
Chanel Lee and Martinelli led the Bears with seven rebounds
each. Trinity shot 36.1 percent (22-61) from the field while
connecting on three of nine from 3-point range while Coast Guard
shot 32.5 percent from the floor (13-40) and hit three of eight
from behind the arc. Coast Guard turned the ball over 28
times, 16 in the second half.
