Hartford, Conn. - Senior forward Nick
Cantone (New York, N.Y.) had a goal and an assist and
classmate Zac Trudeau (Norwell,
Mass.) made four saves to earn a shutout in goal, as the
Trinity College Bantams posted a 2-0 victory over the visiting
Tufts University Jumbos in the quarterfinals of the New England
Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championship Tournament
this afternoon.
Trinity, ranked No. 2 in New England and No. 22 in the nation,
improves to 11-4 and advances to the NESCAC Semifinals for the
first time. The Bantams, seeded No. 3 in the tournament
field, will play No. 2-seeded Amherst College in the semifinals on
Saturday, Nov. 8 at top-seeded Middlebury College. No.
6-seeded Tufts ends the season with an 8-6-1 mark.
Cantone scored in the 20th minute on a rebound after Tufts
senior tri-captain goalie David McKeon (Loudonville,
N.Y.) had made back-to-back saves on point-blank shots by
Bantam sophomore midfielder Peter Marlette (Buffalo,
N.Y.) and junior forward Sam Wisner (Wayland,
Mass.). Marlette had a used a series of pretty
individual moves to advance the ball down the right wing and along
the end line to the Tufts goal.
The score stayed put at 1-0 until Bantam junior midfielder
Chris Doran (Wayland, Mass.) gave Trinity an
insurance goal in the 77th minute, controlling the ball and making
a quick move on a Tufts back who was defending the goal with McKeon
out of position. Marlette and Cantone provided assists on the
play.
Tufts had an early chance to score when junior forward
Dan Schoening (Kenmore, Wash.) fired just over the
cross bar from 18 yards away and the Bantam net empty, after a
Trinity back had fallen down with the ball and Trudeau had not yet
gotten back in place. The Jumbos controlled play for the
majority of the second half, as Doran's goal came on Trinity's only
second-half shot, but could not come up with any scoring
opportunities. McKeon finished with six saves, while Trudeau
records his second shutout of the Jumbos in eight days.
