New London, Conn. - Senior co-captain midfielder Chris
Meinke (Westport, Conn.) scored the game-winning goal on a
direct kick from just outside the box in the middle of the field
with 3:14 remaining in the second overtime to lead the Connecticut
College Camels back from a 2-0 deficit to a 3-2 triumph over the
visiting Trinity College Bantams in the New England Small College
Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's soccer opener for both teams
this afternoon on Harkness Green. Trinity falls to 2-1
overall, while the Camels even their overall mark at 1-1 with the
win in their home opener.
After almost 17 minutes of scoreless extra time, Trinity was
called for a foul in its own zone, and Meinke blasted the ball into
the upper left corner of the net for clincher. The Camels had
tied the game in the 54th minute, again taking advantage
of a Trinity foul, as senior forward Matt Hula (Litchfield,
Conn.) scored on an indirect kick with a shot from the
left corner of the box.
Trinity held the early advantage, scoring early on a hard shot
by senior forward Nick Cantone (New York, N.Y.)
after classmate Michael Van Beuren (Spring City,
Pa.) had intercepted a poor kick by the Camel goalie and
fed him the ball. Cantone returned the favor with a perfect
pass from the left wing to the middle to Van Beuren, who placed a
shot past Connecticut College senior goalie Ted Lane
(Portland, Oregon) that gave Trinity a 2-0 lead 24:29 into
the game.
The Camels got on the scoreboard late in the first stanza, when
another Trinity infraction gave senior forward David
Kellogg (Kula, Hawaii) a penalty kickwith 3:18 on the
clock. Kellogg converted the opportunity with a rolling kick
into the lower left corner of the goal.
Trinity had several close chances in the second half, as junior
back Jason Kulik (Salem, Mass.) hit the post on
the lofted shot from the right side and a hard liner by Van Beuren
was redirected off the head of a Camel player but caromed off the
cross bar. Trinity gave Connecticut College an opportunity to
win in regulation with a red card in the 84th minute, but the
Bantam defense held thanks to a game-saving, diving stop by Kulik
on a shot over the head of Trinity senior goalie Zac
Trudeau (Norwell, Mass.). Playing one man short for
the last minutes of the second half, Trinity junior midfielder
Peter Marlette (Buffalo, N.Y.) nearly gave the
Bantams a dramatic victory when his corner kick try with just one
second on the clock was barely reached and batted away by Lane.
Trudeau finished with six saves, including four in the second
half, while Lane had six stops for the Camels. Kellogg
notched a goal and assists and the Camels outshot Trinity,
17-16.
