Hartford, Conn. - Freshman Casey McNamara
(Montclair, N.J.) and sophomore James Mooney
(Princeton, N.J.) scored goals to lead the visiting
Amherst College Lord Jeffs to a 2-1 win over the Trinity College
Bantams in the New England Small College Athletic Conference
(NESCAC) men's soccer regular season finale for both teams
afternoon. Trinity, ranked No. 3 in New England and No. 21 in
the nation, closes the regular campaign at 10-3-1 overall and 5-3-1
in the NESCAC with its second loss in a row, while the Lord Jeffs,
ranked No. 5 in New England, finish the regular season at 10-3-1
and 6-2- 1 in the league while extending their unbeaten streak to
seven games with their second straight win.
The loss drops Trinity into a fourth-place tie place in the
final NESCAC standings and the Bantams will play a NESCAC
Championship Quarterfinal game at the Bowdoin College Polar Bears
on Sunday, Nov. 1 at 12:30 p.m. Trinity lost to Bowdoin at
home last Saturday, 2-0, which gives the Polar Bears, who also
finished 5-3-1 in the league, a tiebreaking edge on the Bantams,
and, therefore, the home game in the league tournament.
Amherst finished tied with Williams for second place in the NESCAC,
but lost its regular season game to drop to the No. 3 seed in the
league tournament. The Lord Jeffs will host No. 6-seeded
Middlebury in its NESCAC Quarterfinal game on Sunday, Nov. 1 at
12:30 p.m. Trinity will be playing in its third straight
NESCAC Championship Tournament on Sunday, after reaching the league
semifinals for the first time last fall.
McNamara scored midway through the first half and Mooney
followed suit in the 67th minute to give Amherst a 2-0 lead.
Junior midfielder Peter Marlette (Buffalo, N.Y.)
scored on an assist by sophomore goalie Grant Schonberg
(Mendham, N.J.) with 1:19 remaining in the game to cut the
deficit to one and break a 232-minute scoring drought for Trinity,
but the Bantams ran out of time. Schonberg had eight saves
and Lord Jeff sophomore Leonard Kovacs (Wolfersdorf,
Germany) made seven stops.
