Trinity Men's Soccer Pulls Away From Westfield State

Hartford, Conn. - Senior forward Adam Lanza (Glen Cove, N.Y.) scored the game-winning goal early in the second half and added an assist to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 5-1 victory over the visiting Westfield State College Owls in men's soccer action this afternoon.  Trinity, ranked No. 4 in New England and No. 24 in the nation, improves to 6-1-1, while the Owls fall to 4-6-1 with their first loss in three games.

Lanza scored the clincher in the 68th minute on a two-one-one breakaway, passing to sophomore forward Dan Mayernick (Gladwyne, Pa.) who touched it back to Lanza on the right side leaving Westfield senior goalie Lucas Dexter (Acushnet, Mass.) with no chance to stop Lanza's shot.  The Owls had tied the score six minutes prior when sophomore midfielder Tim Parsons (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) scored off the cross bar from senior midfielder Ben Berthiaume (Swansea, Mass.)

The game was scoreless for the opening 59:45 of play with each team applying offensive pressure but failing to get off many solid shots at the goal.  The Owls nearly took the lead in the final minute of the first half with two corner kicks opportunities and four shots on goal all coming up empty.  Owl sophomore back Sam LaBonte (Westhampton, Mass.) blasted a shot off the Trinity cross bar early in the second stanza and Dexter dove to deny a point-blank shot by Bantam senior tri-captain forward Sam Wisner (Wayland, Mass.) moments later.  Wisner finally ended the scoreless drought, poking in a rebound after a save of his initial shot by Dexter.  Trinity's depth got the best of the Owls, as the Bantams netted three goals in the final seven minutes against a tired Westfield State defense.

Mayernick totaled a goal and two assists for the Bantams, while Wisner had a goal and an assist, and freshman midfielder Anthony El-Hachem (Vernon, Conn.) tallied his first career goal.  Sophomore Grant Schonberg (Mendham, N.J.) finished five saves and senior backstop Nathan Maggiotto (Concord, N.H.) stopped one shot, while Dexter finished with nine saves for the Owls.
