Daytona Beach, Fla. - Sophomore guard Michelle Royals
(Torrington, Conn.) had a game-high 16 points to lead the
Trinity College Bantams to a 72-36 win over the Rutgers
University-Camden Raptors in the opening round of the Daytona Beach
Women's Basketball Shootout at the Ocean Center. Trinity
improves to 8-2 with its fifth straight win and advances to the
championship game against the winner of tonight's game between
Emory and Henry College and No. 10-ranked Thomas More College
tomorrow night at 9 p.m. The Raptors fall to 2-7 with their
fifth loss in a row and will play in the consolation round tomorrow
at 7 p.m.
Trinity, playing in its first game since Dec. 12, raced to a
quick 8-0 lead on its way to a 23-point halftime advantage.
The Bantams received 13 first-half points from Royals and
outrebounded Rutgers-Camden, 35-16, in the opening half. The
Bantams held Rutgers-Camden to 3-for-25 (12.0 percent) shooting
from the floor in the opening half. The Bantams collected the
first 13 points of the second half to hike their lead to 50-14 and
led by as many as 37 points (57-20).
Trinity placed 13 players in the scoring column. The Bantams shot
26-for-69 (37.7 percent) from the floor and 6-for-15 (40.0) from
three-point range. Rutgers-Camden shot only 7-for-45 (15.6 percent)
from the floor, including 0-for-14 from three-point range.
Trinity also held a 54-32 advantage off the boards, led by nine
rebounds from junior Molly McGlynn (Sleepy Hollow,
N.Y.). Sophomore captain Stephanie Deisley
(Riverside, NJ/Holy Cross) finished with a team-high 12
points for the Lady Raptors, including 8-for-8 shooting from the
foul line.
