Amherst, Mass. - Three players recorded a double-double to lead
the Baruch College Bearcats to a 74-61 win over the Trinity
College Bantams in game two of the Amherst College Women's
Basketball Classic this evening. The Bearcats improve to 4-0 with
the win, while the Bantams drop to 3-2. Baruch will take on
host Amherst, a 74-36 winner over Renssealer, in Friday's first
game, tomorrow at 2 p.m. Trinity will take on the Engineers at
4 p.m.
Kalea Davis scored a game-high 24 points and pulled down 16
rebounds, Megan Bouwens had 11 points and 13 boards, and Monique
Salmon added 17 points while dishing out 11 assists, as the trio of
outstanding performances kept Baruch unbeaten. Recording a
double-double for Trinity was senior tri-captain center
Christine Card (Waterbury, Conn.), who had 12
points, 13 rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block. Sophomore
guard Michelle Royals (Torrington,
Conn.) added 12 points of her own and recorded five
assists, but the Bantams were led in the points column by senior
guard Tess Donie (Worcester, Mass.), who finished
with 14. Sophomore guard Kaitlin Ciarleglio (Waterbury,
Conn.) had five assists on the night. Trinity shot a
mere 25 percent from the floor in the opening half and finished at
29.9 percent, while Baruch knocked down 42.6 percent of its shots.
Baruch jumped out to a 5-0 lead and would hold it until an
old-fashioned three-point play from Card, who gave the Bantams a
14-13 advantage with 12 minutes to play in the first half. The lead
would change hands several times over the next six minutes, as
Donie tried to keep Trinity close by knocking down a pair of threes
in a span of 41 seconds. Salmon had the answer for Donie,
however, as she recorded a three-point play, stole the ensuing
in-bounds pass and put home another three-point play to give the
Bearcats a 24-20 lead. Baruch would end the half on a 7-0 run,
leading 33-25 at the break.
Baruch held its lead until a Card layup gave Trinity a 52-51
edge with 7:55 to play. Just three-and-a-half minutes later,
though, Davis hit a jumper to make it a 61-54 game in favor of the
Bearcats. Royals made it a four-point game on a three-pointer, but
Baruch hung on down the stretch and took its biggest lead of the
game (13) when Davis put home a layup with 00:03 on the clock.
