Hartford, Conn. - Sophomore back Connor Reilly
(Trumbull, Conn.) scored the first two goals of his
collegiate career in a 2:01 span late in the second half, as the
Trinity College Bantams posted a 2-2 tie in double overtime against
the visiting Middlebury College Panthers in New England Small
College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's soccer action this
afternoon. Trinity, ranked No. 5 in New England, is now 2-0-1
overall and 1-0-1 in the NESCAC with the tie in its home
opener. Middlebury, ranked No. 4 in New England, is 2-1-1
overall and 1-0-1 in the league. Middlebury extends its
unbeaten streak against the Bantams to 12 games (9-0-3 since 1999)
After a scoreless first half, Middlebury sophomore midfielder
Rob Redmond (Morristown, N.J.) opened the scoring
in the 52nd minute with a left-footed shot from just outside the
box and to the right, after Bantam senior tri-captain midfielder
Chris Doran (Wayland, Mass.) had deflected
Redmond's initial right-footed shot from the same spot. The
Panthers went ahead, 2-0, on a hard shot by junior midfielder
Carson Cornbrooks (Williston, Vt.) 30:50 left in
regular play.
Trinity got on the scoreboard with 17:27 on the clock, when
Reilly skied for a pass by senior back Jason Kulik (Salem,
Mass.) and headed the ball over the outstretched arms of
Panther sophomore GK Tim Cahill (South Glastonbury,
Conn.). Reilly tied the game with a blast from 45
yards away in the middle of the field that sailed into the upper
right corner of the net. Trinity nearly took the lead in the
82nd minute when sophomore forward Dan Mayernick (Gladwyne,
Pa.) headed another pass from Kulik just over the cross
bar.
In overtime, Middlebury sophomore forward Tyler Macnee
(Williston, Vt.) came close to winning the game when he
blasted the ball just over the goal on a one-on-one chance with
Trinity sophomore GK Grant Schonberg (Mendham,
N.J.) with 1:19 on the clock. Cahill dove low and to
his right to stop a hard shot by Trinity senior forward
Adam Lanza (Glen Cove, N.Y.) in the second extra
period. Schonberg finished with 10 saves and Cahill had
three.
