Bristol, R.I. - The visiting Trinity College Bantam defeated the
Roger Williams University Hawks, 77-52, in women's basketball
action this evening. Trinity improves to 14-3 and Roger
Williams falls to 7-10.
Accurate shooting and tough defense in the opening half gave
Trinity a significant advantage that the Hawks were unable to
overcome. The Bantams put a full-court press on the Hawks from
tip-off that was difficult to break. Trinity began the game
on an 11-0 run over the first 3:09, shooting 5-of-6 over that
stretch. Elizabeth Kilzi (Waverly, Pa.) got Roger
Williams on the board at the 16:11 mark with a jumper, yet the
Trinity offense continued to roll. Trinity would score the next
nine straight points to take a 23-2 lead. At one point in the
first half, the Bantams were shooting 80% from the field, hitting
eight of their first ten shots. The Hawks shot only 2-of-12 to
begin the game. Sophomore guard Michelle Royals
(Torrington, Conn.) gave Trinity its largest lead of the
game with a jumper to make it 45-18 with 2:05 to play in the first
half. By the end of the period, the Bantams held a 21-point
lead. In the second half, the Bantams were held to only 37.5%
shooting in the period compared to their 62.1 clip in the first
half. The Hawks improved their shooting from 32.1% in the first
half to 46.4% in the second, but were unable to overcome the large
deficit.
Four players scored in double figures for Trinity, including
Royals, who finished with a game-high 18 points off the bench.
Senior guard Tess Donie (Worcester, Mass.) scored
12 in the game, while junior forward Rebecca Cohn (San
