Middletown, Conn. – Junior forward Dan Mayernick
(Gladwyne, Pa.) scored the game's only goal and classmate Grant Schonberg
(Mendham, N.J.) earned a shutout with four saves to lead the
visiting Trinity College Bantams to a 1-0 win over the Wesleyan
University Cardinals in New England Small College Athletic
Conference (NESCAC) men's soccer action this afternoon.
Trinity improves to 4-3 overall and 1-3 in the NESCAC with its
second straight 1-0 triumph, while the Cardinals fall to 3-4
overall and 1-3 in the league. Mayernick scored the only goal
in Trinity's 1-0 win over Western Connecticut on Wednesday, and the
only Bantam goal in a 2-1 loss to Bates last weekend.
Mayernick put home a rebound in the 52nd minute, taking a pass
all alone on the left side of the box and headed it towards the
net. Wesleyan goalkeeper Adam Purdy (Montclair, N.J.) made the
stop, but the rebound went right back to Mayernick, who kicked it
into the right side of the net at 51:07. Trinity nearly made
it 2-0 in the 54th minute. Freshman Julian Gocksch (Centerport,
N.Y.) fired a shot from 20 yards out that hit the crossbar and
bounced to senior Peter Marlette
(Buffalo, N.Y.), who had a shot at a wide-open net, but the
linesman ruled Marlette was offside. Wesleyan's best
opportunity came in the closing minutes of the first half. At
39:54, sophomore Walter Rodriguez (North Plainfield, N.J.) found
himself in the left side of the box with a shot at an open net, as
Schonberg had come out to play the ball, but Rodriguez's shot was
blocked at the goal line by a diving Bantam junior back Connor Reilly.
Purdy had a pair of saves for Wesleyan. Wesleyan held a 16-9
edge in shots, but the Cardinals put only five on target as most
sailed just past the post or over the crossbar. Wesleyan also took
the only three corner kicks of the game, all of which came in the
second half. Wesleyan leads the all-time series 40-28-8, but
Trinity has won three of the past four meetings. The visiting team
has also won the last three meetings, as Wesleyan earned a 2-1 win
in Hartford, Conn., in 2009, while Trinity won 3-1 in Middletown in
2008. Each contest for both squads thus far in 2010 has been a
one-goal affair.
