BOSTON, Mass. – Junior Margo
Russell (Madison, Maine) hit a short jumper from the right
baseline to lift the University of New England to a 68-66 victory
over Trinity College and advance to the finals of the Emerson
College Invitational Tournament at Brown & Plofker Gym in
women's basketball action this evening. Russell's
shot earned the Nor'Easters a Sunday afternoon game against
Clark University, which beat the host school 70-64 in the first
game of the afternoon, and Trinity will face Emerson in a
consolation game at 1:00 p.m tomorrow. Trinity falls to 0-1
to start the season.
With the game tied at 63, Trinity senior
tri-captain Kristen Fahey (Cumberland, R.I.)
nailed a three-point shot with 1:41 on the clock. Following
an exchange of missed shots, junior Kelley Paradis
(Newport, Maine) grabbed a rebound on the defensive end
for UNE and followed up with a three of her own on the offensive
end to forge a 66-66 tie. Fahey tried to give the Bantams the
lead again, but her shot didn't fall, and although the
Bantams corralled the rebound, a turnover gave Russell and the
Nor'Easters the opportunity to hit the winning shot with no
time on the clock.
Fahey was one of three players in double
figures for Trinity with 14 points. Junior Kaitlin
Ciarleglio (Waterbury, Conn.) led all scorers with 15 and
dished out eight assists. Russell and Paradis were two of five
players in double figures for UNE with 13 and 12 points
respectively. Russell also had seven rebounds to tie with
sophomore Beth Suggs (Bath, Maine) for team
honors.
