Brunswick, Maine - The Bowdoin College Polar Bear softball team
posted a 6/4-5/0 doubleheader sweep of the visiting Trinity College
Bantams in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC)
East Division action this afternoon. The Polar Bears are now
27-10 overall and 6-3 in the NESCAC, while Trinity falls to 19-10
overall and drops to second place in the NESCAC East at 8-3.
Bowdoin CF Hillary Smyth went 3-for-3 with three RBI and a
game-saving throw in the dramatic final inning. Smyth sparked a
four-run outburst in the second inning with her two-run triple and
added a run-scoring single in the sixth as Bowdoin carried a 6-3
lead into the final frame. Trinity mounted an error-aided rally and
drew within a single run, 6-5, with a runner on third base and one
out. Freshman Kerry McCarthy (Andover,
Mass.) lifted a fly ball to Smyth, who recorded the
putout and threw home to nail the potential game-tying score at the
plate to clinch the win.
Julia Jacobs got the win for Bowdoin by allowing three runs and six
hits over seven innings. Kara Nilan also had three hits in the win
for Bowdoin. Junior Kristen Anderson (West Haven,
Conn.) took the loss for the Bantams after tossing
two innings and permitting four earned runs. Freshman 3B
Caroline Blanchard (Norwich, Conn.) had three
hits to lead Trinity in the opener, while fellow rookie
Amelia Mostovoy (San Francisco, Calif.) had a home
run in the loss.
Nilan was the story in game two, as Bowdoin surpassed the 2007
team's previous record of 26 single-season wins. Nilan allowed just
five hits, no runs and struck out four in the complete game
shutout. Bowdoin scored twice in the third and twice in the sixth
to seal the win. Shavonne Lord had three hits including an RBI
while Gen Barlow had two hits and an RBI. Trinity junior
2B Katherine Stoltenberg (Montgomery,
N.J.) had two hits against Nilan, while starting
pitcher Katherine Poulos (Wilton, Conn.) scattered
nine hits and allowed three earned runs in the loss.
