Hartford, Conn. – Senior
co-captain midfielder Nate Seiberling (Sharon,
Mass.) scored the game's only goal in the opening
minutes of the second half on an assist past the defense by
sophomore midfielder Nick Aubin (Simsbury, Conn.)
to lead the visiting Colby College Mules to a 1-0 win over the
Trinity College Bantams in the New England Small College Athletic
Conference (NESCAC) men's soccer season opener for both teams
this afternoon. Trinity, ranked No. 9 in New England loses to
Colby and allows a goal by the Mules for the first time in three
years.
Aubin passed the ball up the middle of the
field and Seiberling outran a Bantam defender to the ball, before
shooting over the right shoulder of Trinity junior goalkeeper
Grant Schonberg (Mendham, N.J.) from 15 yards away
on the right wing. Trinity's closest chance to tie came
midway through the second half, when freshman Michael Stankiewicz (Townsend, Mass.) shot the ball on the ground
past Colby junior goalie John Gardner (Winter Haven,
Fla.) but just wide of the left goalpost.
In the first half, Schonberg helped keep the
game scoreless with a diving save of a point-blank attempt by Aubin
15 minutes into the contest and left his feet to stop another close
Mule shot not much later. Trinity junior forward
Chris Binnie (Kingston, Jamaica) appeared to net
the first Bantam tally of the season midway through the first half,
but was ruled offsides. Gardner and the Colby defense kept
the Trinity offense off the board the rest of the way, as Gardner
finished with four saves. Schonberg notched six stops, including
another diving stop of a nearly-identical Seiberling attempt
shortly after the Colby goal.
